I have a chocolate lab who is 7 years of age...we have had him for 4. Ever since we adopted him, he has had this annoying habit of licking everything n sight....he especially licks fabric; our rug, the couch, and the worst of all our clothes (the worst part of this is that he licks your privates, so it then looks like you peed your pants).

Whenever he does this we scold him and gentle tap him on the snout, but the minute you turn around, he does it again almost immediately. This is very embarrassing because people's crotches are the first thing he goes for...not just to sniff (which I know is normal), but he dives in and in one giant slurp, completely soaks them....everyone who comes to visit automatically get told to cove there crotch.

How do I make this stop. Help!!!

Well the problem here is probably that he can't remember the punishment. If he turns around and does it right away after being punished isn't that a clue that it isn't severe enough for him to think twice? You could get a shock collar or something like that to startle him. Now don't go thinking that I think it is a good idea to cause pain to animals but what we have here is a problem that has been a habit for years and this dog has been "taught" that he can get away with it so this calls for drastic measures. Remember to be firm not mean. Getting aggravated will only make it worse. Show him that you are in charge but it isn't a dominant thing. Make him feel secure that you will always be "top dog" and this type of habit will go away. That includes being 100% consistant. It is VITAL that you don't let him get away with this even one out of fifty times or he won't learn. I wish you the best of luck!! Tanisha (anymore questions write to stanishas@aol.com)
