a neighbor keeps their beagle chained ad penned in their back yard with no shade all summer long and thinks this is not cruel and i would bet intend to leave it outside during the winter and our winters can be pretty severe she says she loves this dog and that if beagles are kept inside they lose their sense of smell is she taking the proper care for this dog or is this dog being treated poorly

Being on a chain is emotional abuse for a dog, and particularly a beagle, which is a highly intelligent animal. Lack of shelter, in hot weather or cold, is physical abuse. I have no idea what she means by losing it's sense of smell...never heard of that. It won't matter if the dog dies. Try and get it some help before winter, they don't have much of a coat. You may be that dog's only hope. Thanks,

Lost Feather

While I agree that being on a chain is not the idea thing for  a dog, sometimes it is necessary.  However, beagles are not going to lose their sense of smell from being inside.  It is abuse to leave a dog outside with no shade in any weather condition.  They do have a thin coat and that poor dog needs your help.  Call animal control they will make sure the dog is taken care of.

I think that leaving a dog outside for long periods of time is cruel in any kind of weather.Dogs aren't meant to be outside all day there meant to be in side and loved by their owner.when you get a dog you should be aware of the responsibility that goes along with the animal. you can't just do whatever you please with animals they need certain things in their life.

i don't believe in tieing your dog up on a chain in your back yard if you have a fenced in yard that has no escape routes in it there is no reason at all that your dog should be left on a chain  its ok to leave your dog outside for a little while during the day but it shouldn't be kept out there all the time it should be in the house if it is left outside then it should have food water and shelter  at all times with blankets to keep it warm.if you don't have a fence around you property then it is ok to have your dog on a chain but not if you have a fence.

It is so unfair that dogs especially inteligent Beagles are chained up in a back yard when they could have a so much better life. If you are having trouble with your dog give it to people who you know that will take care of it. I have a Beagle called Louis and my mum always says 'he is one spoil-et dog,' but we can't help it we want what is the best for him. It is a big responsibility having a dog and I think that these days people just think of themselves too much. You wouldn't like it if you were chained up in the back yard with no shelter, no freedom, no warmth and probely hardly any food. If you think that he/she will run away train him, put a tag on him so people can bring hi back or simply build a fence. After all dogs are for life, so let them have one!!!

I have a pit bull and a pit and lab mix.  Is it cruel to put them outside when I am at work?  I leave food and water for them along with toys.  My pure pit uses the mats that I have for the porch to lay on in the yard.  She likes to drag the mats by the fence so she can sit there and watch people and cars go by.  I do go home at lunch and bring them inside.  I have tried to keep them inside in the morning but each time I came home they destroyed something.  I never know is it better to leave them outside while I am away or keep the in the kennel.  Please advise.  This tears me up and as I said I come home everyday for lunch and take them for a walk and bring them inside.  Before I leave for work they take a 25 minute drive with me to drop off my son in the morning.
