I have a 2 1/2 year old toy teacup poodle mix, 5 pounds.  I want to breed her but have seen no signs of a heat.  Can someone tell me other than obvious signs of bleeding how else I can tell if she is in heat?

Please, please. please do not breed an animal unless your goal is to better the breed, and that can't be done with a mixed breed. They would undoubtedly be cute puppies, but my local humane society kills 20-30 BARRELS of dogs every month. Yeah, they pack them in barrels...I don't mean to be harsh...but there's just too many dogs out there for the available number of homes for them. Sure, you wouldn't have any trouble finding homes for your puppies... but that's just that many less homes available for those dogs going into barrels. Please don't add to this problem. Enjoy your wonderful pet, but please get it spayed. Don't take my word for it... volunteer just one day at an animal shelter.

Thanks, Lost Feather

A positive alternative for owners who want to have the "miracle of life" is to foster a pregnant dog.  Contact your shelter and see if there are any pregnant animals.  Often, you keep the mom and litter until they're 8 weeks old and adoptable.  Many shelters provide a discount if you want to keep puppies.
