Black labs, like all of the other species of Canis domesticus cannot see in color.  They can distinguish between the red and green lights by their position on the light, and not by their color.  They see in black and white, with various shades of gray.  They have rods for sensing light, but poorly developed cones, which are the color sensing organs of the eye.
The earlier answer about telling which ball was which was probably because of the smell left on the ball from previous use.

so, you're assuming that the dog saw the entire movie in color, and in 3d? what is wrong with you people? dogs' vision is very different from our own. they cannot even see in 2d, meaning photos or videos mean nothing to them.

dogs' vision is generally stated to be 20/75 meaning that almost everything we see in focus close up is blurred to dogs. this means that even if a dog could watch TV it would be blurred.

dogs eyes also can detect motion more easily than humans, and more quickly. this means that when dogs happen to glance at a TV, they see a series of still images, not a movie picture.

the thought that a dog could actually "prefer" spy kids 3d to 2d is absolutely the most ridiculous and idiotic assumption I have witnessed in quite a while.

color vision is limited as seen in my source link.

How Dogs See Color
How do dogs see color? Are they color blind as many believe? The following article examines how dogs interpret brightness, shape, contrast and color.

By Dana K. Vaughan, Ph.D., Dept. of Biology, University of Wisconsin, Oshkosh

email: Vaughan@uwosh.edu

Vision is just one of several senses that dogs use to scan their world for important information. Any visual scene has multiple aspects to which dogs' brains are sensitive: brightness, shape, contrast, and motion are a few of these. But what about color?

Many authorities have stated that "dogs are colorblind", with the implication that dogs perceive only black, white, and shades of grey. In fact, this was not known for certain, but became "folklore". Then, in the late 1980s, a definitive set of experiments was done at the University of California, Santa Barbara, by what may well be the world's foremost research program on comparative color vision. I played a very small part in this study, in that I volunteered my two Italian Greyhounds, "Flip" and "Gypsy", for the study. A third dog, a toy Poodle named "Retina", was volunteered by her owner, who was also one of the researchers. All three dogs were beloved family pets, both before and after the studies.

Bright and colorful fetch toys for dogs
To define canine color vision, each dog was placed into a box facing a display of three round light panels in a horizontal row. Beneath each light panel was a cup. A computer provided combinations of different colored lights in the three panels. Two were always the same color, while the third was different. Over a series of some 4,000 trials, each dog was taught to "find the one that's different". Every correct choice was rewarded with a treat in the cup beneath the correct choice. Every wrong choice meant that no treat was forthcoming, from any cup. All three dogs were so food-driven that they weren't even starved for the tests. Mine loved their "lab days" and would practically drag me onto the elevator to get to the box!

When it was clear that each dog understood the test, some 200-400 tests were run per session, over a period of weeks. This provided a large data set on which statistics could be run. If the dog couldn't tell two colors apart and was just guessing, s/he would be right, on average, only 33% of the time (one out of three possible choices). If the dog could tell two colors apart, s/he would be right much more often.

To ensure that the dogs were identifying the different panel based on color alone, the position of the different colored panel was randomly moved around (left, middle, or right) and the relative brightness of each light was also randomized. The key publication describing this classic work is: J. Neitz, T. Geist, and G.S. Jacobs (1989), "Color vision in the dog", Visual Neuroscience Vol. 3, pages 119-125.

These experiments showed that dogs do see color, but in a more limited range than that seen by normal humans, who see the rainbow of colors described by "VIBGYOR": Violet, Indigo, Blue, Green, Yellow, Orange, and Red (plus hundreds of variations on these shades). Instead, dogs see "VIBYYYR" (Violet, Indigo, Blue, Yellow, Yellow, Yellow, and Red). The colors Green, Yellow, and Orange all look alike to dogs; but look different from Red and different from the various Blues and Purples. Dogs are very good at telling different shades of VIB apart. Finally, Blue-Green looks White to dogs.

The simple explanation for these differences in color vision is this. The retinas of normal humans have three (3) types of color receptors, called "cones". Each cone type is particularly sensitive to light of a narrow limit within the entire VIBGYOR range. That means that three different "cone lines" of communication run back to the visual part of the brain, which then compares the weight of the signals coming in from each of cone "line". Different weights produce a perception of different colors. In dogs (and in "green-blind" humans), there are only two (2) types of cones, so there is less basis for comparison by the brain, and thus the perceived color range is more limited. In sum, dog color vision is "color-limited", not "color-blind".

To better understand the difference between VIBGYOR and VIBYYYR, consider what a dog would see in each of the following color combinations.

Humans see: Dogs see
How can we put this information to use as dog trainers? First, we have to recognize that color is just one aspect of a visual scene as perceived by a dog. There are two other aspects that are just as important, if not more so.

The first of these is motion. Think of a green lizard motionless on a leafy branch in the tropics. Both you and your dog would have a hard time seeing it - until it moved! Think back to your dog chasing a green tennis ball against green grass. He can follow it fine, even though there is no color difference on which to cue. Objects moving at a moderate rate of speed are, in general, easier to spot than motionless objects.

The second of these is contrast (that is, outline against background). A stationary object that has a very distinct and very different shape from its background is easier to spot, while one that is patterned like its background will blend in. That's the principle of the camouflage clothing worn by hunters. Yes, it's the color of the woods, but more importantly, camo breaks up the human body's outline against the patchy background scene of branches, leaves, and underbrush. Even small movements are harder to see when an object's outline blurs with its background.

The third is color. Back to hunters for a moment; ever wonder how we get away with wearing screaming hunter's orange hats with our camouflage jackets and pants? Deer are probably like dogs (VIBYYYR): to them, orange is not different from the green or brown undergrowth, and a hat doesn't give a terribly distinctive shape. As a color, safety orange sticks out like a sore thumb to humans, but not to dogs or deer.

So, to maximize an object's visibility to a dog, we should strive to combine: (1) moderate motion (when feasible); (2) maximal contrast (a dark and white pattern unlike that of the background scene); and (3) stand-out color (one that is identifiable by dogs and does not occur very often in the background scene). The best of all possible worlds for most background scenes would be boldly-patterned Bright Purple and White objects.

Having said all that, let's never forget the other keen senses the dog has at his disposal (and we do not): smell and hearing. These are minimally helpful when a dog is working bumpers, but play powerful roles when a dog is working live or shot game.

That's is just awefull!!!!  I just can't believe that!  You have to be wrong.  But incase you are correct then we must do something about this!  Their has got to be some kind of doctor who specializes in dog eyes.  We can't let these poor beautiful creatures go on like this.  Their must be doggy contacts for this.  If not maybey lasix eye surgery.  In the meantime I will do some research and get back with you. But good God, it's just not right!

I think that black labs can see color because they seem to not run into things as often. For instance I have had a Pug and a black lab at the same time and my pug always seemed to run into the same thing almost everyday, but my black lab didnt.we talked to our vet about it and he had taken a test and said  that most dogs usualy dont pass it . My black lab, boomer, did pass the blind color test. Either it was just Boomer or that Black labs can see in the dark.

I do not think that black labs can see in color. Most dogs cannot see in color, except poodles, but they see only shades of reds. All of u people who think they can r almost right. They migth be able to see in shades of red like Poodles. But, they r not able to c in pure color, I did reasurch on it, and it showed up that they can't c in color. Even though their retina is desighned the same, they are still not able to c in color. Some peoples retina is desighned the same, but they cannot see in color. For example, colorblind people.

I think that black labs can see in color. My black lab is smarter than any dog I've ever had. He is alert and can tell the colors of his toys. If you say "Go get you blue bone" he will immediately get it and cheerfully jog back to you. I really think you people need to find something better to talk about then each other. I guess no one knows how the eye works. Retinas have nothing to do with color. Dogs don't have the right rods and cones to see in color. No dogs have them. NONE. Sure, they're smart and sweet, but there are plenty of colorblind people who are smart and sweet too.

You guys have a great argument but I am afraid to tell you that dogs can only see in black, white and grey. This is because of there undeveloped cones. They have a great nose and can guide a blind person through a pitch black hall with black doors and still find his way, Labs olfactory glands are 100 times stronger then yours!!!!

Okay, there is a huge controversy over whether dogs can see in color, there have been many tests and there is not an exact answer, our best guess is that dogs do see color but not the same as us. The colors are not as defined as ours because their eyes are made to see better in darker conditions so the colors they see would be different.  They do see a larger range of blacks and grays than us and all dogs see the same, black labs aren't the only special ones, I own one black lab, 3 jack russells terrors and an old rottie and each one of them have their own things about them that make them so darn special!!

goodness. okay, dogs are not completely colorblind. they have only 2 sensors -unlike us, we have 3- for yellow-green and red. we have blue. dogs cant tell the differences between most reds and greens. their flicker-sensors are faster to pick up than ours, therefor they see TV in flickers instead of a steady stream-image. any more questions and i'll be happy to talk more. :)

It has been proven by many studies that dogs do not see in color, regardless of breed.  Although it seems that sometimes your dog knows what color things are, there are many other factors that go into a dog knowing color.  Dog see the same thing as a Black and white photograph.  They are black and white with varying shades of grey.

according to petplace.com

Dogs do see in color, but their perception of color is not the same as it is for people. They cannot distinguish between red, orange, yellow or green. They can see various shades of blue and can differentiate between closely related shades of gray that are not distinguishable to people.

As the Dr. Know-it-all said, labs can not see in color.  Yes they can be used for hunting and they can detect that an orange vest is diffrent shade than that of a tree.  A hunting dog does not need to have color to be able to be successful at finding ducks or whatever type of animal you are hunting.  As far as 3-D vision, I am sorry that is not possible either.  A dogs vision is not 20/75 a dog does have a clear vision path.  Some sources on the internet are wrong about a lot of their info they put put that is probally why it is on the internet not in actual vet clinical books.  As far as they can detect movement better than a human you are absolutely correct a dog can sense movement better than a human, that is an instinct that all dogs have, it is for their protection.  Non-domesticated dogs use it to detect what is around they whether it be a predator or a prey, it is a mean of survival.

Colour vision

A number of studies have been done to investigate the colour vision of dogs, and the results have been conflicting. However, more recent, better controlled studies indicate that dogs do possess and use colour vision, but not to the same degree that humans do. The photoreceptor used for colour vision is the cone, and there are cones present in the canine retina. However, they are present in low numbers, comprising less than 10% of the total photoreceptor population in the central area of the retina, as opposed to the human retina which consists of nearly 100% cones in the fovea. Two distinct type of cones appear to be present in the canine retina. One type is maximally sensitive to light in the wavelength that appears violet to people, and the other type is maximally sensitive to light in the wavelength that appears yellow-green to people. Thus, it appears that the visual spectrum of color in dogs is divided into two hues; one in the violet and blue-violet range, probably appearing as blue, and the other in the greenish-yellow, yellow, and red range, which is probably seen as yellow. Light that appears blue-green to people probably appears as white or shades of gray to dogs. Dogs are unable to differentiate colours that appear as green, yellow-green, orange or red to people, and are unable to differentiate greenish-blue from gray. This is similar to people who are red-green colour blind. However, one study indicates that dogs are better able to differentiate between subtle shades of gray than people, which would be advantageous in increasing visual discrimination in low light conditions, where insufficient light is available to stimulate cones.

No matter how smart we all believe our pets to be.  They are still animals, and have certain limitations.  They are color blind.  You all sound like you are talking about your children, and what they can do!  A dog is a dog is a dog.  I have a black lab.  And he is special to our family.. Loves everyone but doesn't watch a bit of TV....hehe... but of course we don't have one for him to watch.  But they are great companions.  He knows g-o, r-i-d-e, and b-y-e-b-y-e.. But its only because of the action after we say it.. come on people use some common sense.  For every action there is an equal and oposite reaction.  Dogs are smart, color blind animals.

The latest article on this discussion that I can find a reference to is the December 1995 issue of the Journal of Veterinary Medicine. I haven't been able to find this journal in my collection, though. Maybe your vet would have it. I'll keep looking.

If memory serves me right, the thinking is that dogs only see blue and yellow or red and yellow (couldn't remember for sure) because they have many less of the cones (color vision cells) than people. On the other hand, they have many more rods (low light and motion detecting cells) so they see much better in the dark and they can detect much smaller motions than humans.

NO, Sorry "Answer by Me" But Specialists disagree with you. Dogs can see color, they see various shades of yellow and blues but can not see reds.  This is because they have two color receptors instead of three like humans.  It's best to go to experts for answers instead of people who rely on past myths for their knowledge.

i'm doing a science study with my dog and this is how it goes:

Procedure

-taught dog to point
-taught dog the colours
-HOW?
-Placed the 3 cups on the white floor each with a treat underneath so that the dog has to point to the right colour in order to get the treat underneath

basically i would alternate the colours so that it was never the same colour

i think dogs can see colour because:

The reason for this limited range, in both the colourblind human and the dog, is that there are only two kinds of colour receptors in the retinas of their eyes. While most humans have three kinds of colour cells, with three different receptor molecules sensitive to blue, greenish-yellow, and red, dogs only have receptors for yellow and greenish-blue.

so yeah thats what i think

I hate to break it to some of you, but no dog can "see" in color.  What this means is they "see" color much the same way we did when watching a black and white tv. ( anybody here remember those).  Anyway, they can see the differences, but not the colors.  Being a "seeing eye dog" does not mean they can see in the same fashion as humans.  Sorry to have to say it... but grow up guys..

Why don't you guys just read a little bit about the anatomy of an eye.  Humans have many rods and cones - because of the cones, humans can differentiate between colors very well.  Dogs don't have many cones in their eyes - so it is not possible for them to see in color.  You want your dogs to see in color because you love them, and think their missing out if they can't see in color.  Don't feel sorry for them, they do fine seeing in black and white.  Would they feel sorry for you, if they found out that you couldn't smell or hear even remotely close to as well as they can? no.  they'd say you do fine as you are - then they'd lick you.  So quit wishing things on your dogs.  Your dogs are not human - don't wish human characteristics on them.

Dogs are color blind. The only reason you retards think they can pick out colored balls is because, due to their highly developed noses, they have associated certain scents on the balls with certain words you have given. JUST LIKE WHEN YOU SAY SIT, THE DOG SITS. This is not because the dog knows ENGLISH. It is because the dog can associate the word with the motion. Dogs cannot see in 2d nor do they see what is on t.v. They can only hear the sounds. They probably only stay for the movie because they are pack animals that move with the family unit! DUH! Where there are people, the dog will follow. If you call the dog away from the film, it will come unless it is too lazy to move. True dogs are smart. It is people who are not. So get over it and accept it. Dogs ARE COLOR BLIND!!!!!!!!!

It has been recently suggested, against popular opinion, dogs can see certain shades and degrees of color. Less than a human, but more than the typical "black, white and gray". I personally believe my dogs see in color - it is evident in their personalities, and to be honest, fairly ignorant to think they cannot. Dogs will never see like parrots, which can see colors into different spectrums and can tell if a fruit is expired by looking at it, but dogs deserve more credit.

Disagree if you want, just look it up. New research.

This explains it perfectly... Dogs can see in color - but not the same colors you & I would see.  it is almost as if dogs see what a red/green color blind human would see.  i don't think different breeds see different colors.   The reason I found this was because I was trying to find out about 2D vision in dogs. (my puppy follows the cursor on my moniter)

Extensive testing has been conducted at the University of North Carolina in conjunction with Cornell University to determine if Black Labrador Retrievers (specifically) can distinguish any portion of the visible light spectrum.  Short answer is that they definitely can see color; however, there is some evidence suggesting that this ability is limited. The portion of the visible spectrum closest to the ultraviolet range seems totally elusive to Black Labs. It has not been determined why this is the case. Other breeds have been tested (subsequent to these test results) to absolutely no avail.

Dogs cannot see in color, its a proven fact no matter the lab. I know from my own lab, he notices more my voice and my actions than anything else. He's learned the command for "go find yer toy" and "where'd it go" and "go get dad" he can also distinguish "his" fuzzies and good towels that he's not allowed to touch...and all because of my actions. He picks up on my emotions, if I'm sick, if I'm hyper, if I'm mad....his ears show everything as well as his tail. But colors, I'm colorblind myself, and I can distinguish in tones, not true colors.

Everything else on her walk was a dull color and had no big reaction from her. So in my oppion YES labs can see color.

so?  I have to say... no matter how cute dogs are, most of these answers say dogs don't see in color,  and I agree with the people who think so, SORRY. It is mostly the dogs hearing or smell that define things. Like a stick would be black to a dog, not color(brown)...They can sniff out wood.  I rest my case.

Ok, I have had three black labradors, in my life and i'monly 11. Really, no one knows yet if they can see in color. Really I think it's a possiblility, I mean my dogs can find the exact rock or stick that I throw into a creek. They even watch movies. Yes, they do lead the blind also. But, Golden Retrevers do also. I think that the world may never know until someone gets out there and believes they can figure it out. So, i'mnot saying they can, but, i'mnot saying they can't. It's just a mystery, for humans to figure out. I myself plan to become a vetenarian, so maybe I will figure something out myself. I mean I live on a 200 acre farm, with two labradors, and alot of cattle, cats, horses, and many others. Anywho, I know alot about labradors already. I think we all need to stop this fihgting on who is right and who is wrong. Because your both wrong, we don't know. I think we all need to get out there and figure it out ourslfs. Whos with me? So, thanks for listening. I hope this has helped. I try my best.

All dogs are from the same family. Ultimately they all come from wild dogs and have been modified and domesticated by human beings for whatever purpose we deem fit, whether it be hunting, protection, guiding the blind, or companionship just to name a few.  All dogs have vision that is different from that of a human and to suggest that one particular breed of dog has colour vision and the rest do not is contradictory and pretty idiotic.  From what I have learned about dogs they can only see in shades, but regardless of how a dog sees, we will never really know 100% because we are not dogs we are human beings and human beings see in colour!!

--"Dogs are said to have dichromatic vision -- they can see only part of the range of colors in the visual spectrum of light wavelengths. Humans have trichomatic vision, meaning that they can see the whole sprectrum. Dogs probably lack the ability to see the range of colors from green to red. This means that they see in shades of yellow and blue primarily, if the theory is correct. Since it is impossible to ask them, it is not possible to say that they see these colors in the same hues that a human would. Whether or not the ability to see some color is important to dogs or not is hard to say." -Dr.Richards DVM
- Basically yes the retna is similar but only to the extent of that they both have rods and cones. A dog's retna has primarily rods which allow for greyscale colors and few cones "which human retnas primarily have" which allow for a wide range of color. So heres the brass tacks; I dont care if you think you know, unless you have DVM after your name, you are not entitled to use the term "duh." So please, stop your bickering and condescending behavior and lets all be adult.
-Thankyou, and Im thrilled that people take this much interest in their animals.

Guide dogs dont actually determine when the light is red or green. The blind person determines when they want to go foward by listening to the traffic.  If it sounds safe to go, then they will give the foward command. If its not safe to go, the dog will stop or block the person from going out into traffic.

I do beleive that they can se in color because like many in here have already said, their retna is so much like a humans. Plus, they have great hunting skills so that probably means they can see a little color because they dop need great eyesight to hunt in the way they do. They may not see all the colors like we humans do but maybe they can see some.

you are all fools(except for those who know they are colorblind)dogs no matter what breed cannot see in color.  For instance why do trainers train hunting dogs with white and orange bumpers?? Its because the orange color blends in with its background and they cannot see it. They use white because the bright color  stands out against its background.

Dogs can't see in color. And just because they seem to understand how to spell, that's because you use the same tone with each word. Dogs aren't stupid, they can put together that when one tone is used it means something different than when another tone is used. They can't spell; they can't see in color. Just deal with it. Everyone thinks that their dog is special, just like everyone thinks that their child will be the next Einstein.

I am in complete agreement with Dr. Know-it-all.  Canine vision has been a hot topic for a while now and science has done all that it can, everything short of seeing the world through the eyes of a dog (which we all know is completely impossible at this point), to answer this same question. The question of black labs being the only dog to see in color is a new one on me.  Reading all of the responses was a bit daunting.  Wow, a lot of people need to work on their maturity levels, that is just sad to see. Making fun of people you've never met. Congratulations, the legacy of the bully carries on.

Dogs do see in color, but not as well as humans.Studies have shown that dogs are not color blind they are, color limited. The dog's world consists of yellows, blues, and grays. When a human perceives a red object it appears as yellow to the dog, while a green object appears as white, a shade of gray.

I don't get you people.  The way you rationalize your arguments is quite amusing and entertaining.   We have seen reason, intelligent why a lab can't see in color, but not one scientific intelligent piece of info on why they can see in color.  Balls, spy kids. what sre you smoking.  What the heck.  I threw the stick in water and he fetched.  He is a dog of course he will find the stick, your scent is on it.  He can hear the splash.  So...

I feel dumber for have actually read this page full of dumb reasons why black labs can see in color.  Just because your dog can find a stick or choose one ball over the next does not mean that it can see in color.  Labs have an enhanced sense of smell and can appear to be able to see in color when in reality they are just using their sense of smell...For instance, BLACK LABS 4 LIFE said that their dog is able to select a coloured (this is horrible spelling by the way)ball when the color is said.  This is because you have trained your dog into understanding that a certain word goes with a certain smell.  GET IT!!!!  To actually entertain the thought that black labs or even dogs period can see in color is ludicrous... Everybody, excluding a certain few, who has written on this page is either mildly retarded or in elementary school...
