Hi. Before and durng the war in Iraq, the federal building in our community, which is located in the Northwest part of the country, was the site of many protests. A large contingent from the local Friends Church was there on a regular basis. Yesterday, a rally/protest was held at the federal building against Bush's forest policies. No one from the Friends Church was there. I hope I don't sound like some spoiled environmentalist whinimg about the no-shows, but my question is asked simply out of curiosity: Is the definition of war too narrowly defined in the Friends Church? The Bush administration has declared war on the environment in the US. Our forests, streams, and air are under attack. And, the war is being lost as species after species are being eliminated on a daily basis. Why is this issue not at the forefront of the Friends? Are plants and the other animals besides man not part of God's kingdom? You can say that, yes, the members of Friends act independently and can decide whether or not to attend any protest they like; there is no hierachy saying you must attend this protest but cannot attend that protest. But, when I see such a united committment on one issue and absolutely no committment on another, on issues that I think are closely related, my curiosity gets piqued.
