Labs are not to have green eyes. Most likely there was some breeding of yellows in your chocolates pedigree. Dark eyes are preferred but they can be brown, yellow, or black. Black being preferred.

Michele is unfortunately wrong. While it is true that yellow or black labs are not to have green eyes, it is acceptable for chocolate labs to have brown or green eyes, with the latter being a rare feature, but an acceptable one. A little more research on the net will show you that this is ok with chocolates.

hey, i had a chocolate lab, beautiful.  my best friend in the world.  Well, some worker for my dad left the back gate open, and it got out and ended up hit by a car and died.
I know i can never replace this dog, because he was perfect to me, but i am trying to get as much as a resemblence of him as possible.  He died about  4 months ago.
Now my dad says he had "amber" color eyes.  Does anyone know what that means?  Are they rare?  I'm assuming they are.
I'm looking for breeders because i want another "snickers" so bad.(snickers was my dog).
Please email me at: mmilam@cox.net
If someone can help me and maybe tell me anything about him, like distinct characteristics or anything...
I have alot of pictures of him. I can show email you. thanks.

If a Yellow female has brown eyes and breeds with a choco male with Green eyes its a 50% chance you'll get a Yellow with Green Eyes

The US standard says "Eye color should be brown in black and yellow Labradors, and brown or hazel in chocolates. Black, or yellow eyes give a harsh expression and are undesirable."
The UK standard (which as the home country of Labs, is also the FCI standard) says, "Eyes: Medium size, expressing intelligence and good temper; brown or hazel."
As you can see, it is possible to get several different eye colors and shades in Labs, especially chocolates.  I suppose that "hazel" could be interpreted as "green".  In the show ring, very light or dark eyes are often penalized, but eye color (and winning in the show ring!!) has nothing to do with the suitability of your dog as a pet or the "pureness" of his line.
As a breeder of Chocolate and Black labs, I look for soundness first, temperament second, then silhouette, head, coat, tail and movement when breeding and choosing the pups I will keep in my kennel.
Just as most of us could never hope to win a beauty contest, but have many virtues that are a plus to our family and friends, our well-loved pets and priceless fur-friends have much more to give than "beauty" titles. Labs that conform to the Lab standard to such a degree that they succeed in the show ring are rare.
Enjoy your dog and don't worry about the color of his eyes unless you are thinking of breeding- you can be sure that he never worries about the color of yours!!

I got my puppy Jawz from a cousin he looks like a chocolate lab with white paws. He's not pure bred. His mother was white and tan she was pretty small about the size of a jack russel maybe a little bit bigger. I dont know what his father looked like but he had to be a choc. lab. Jawz looks just like a pure bred accept for the white paws. He has a brown nose. His eyes are hazel green. Is there any way to figure out what breeds that are in your puppy?

I BREED CHOCOLATE LABS AND HAVE SEVERAL OF MY OWN.  USUALLY FOR THE FIRST THREE OR FOUR MONTHS, THEIR EYES CAN BE GREEN OR EVEN A BLUISH COLOR.  THEY USUALLY TURN TO THE YELLOW OR BROWN COLOR, BUT GREEN EYES ARE NOT UNCOMMON.  THE ONLY THING GREEN EYES CAN EFFECT IS SHOWING THE DOG.  SHOW DOG RULES FOR CHOCOLATE LABS ARE VERY SPECIFIC, BUT IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE DOG'S QUALITY OR THE DOG BEING PURE.  TO YELLOWLAB:  WHAT YOU ACTUALLY HAVE IS CALLED A STRAWBERRY LAB.  THEY ARE PURE YELLOW'S AS WELL, BUT YOU COULDN'T SHOW THE DOG.  I THINK THEY ARE BEAUTIFUL DOGS AND THEY ARE NOT THAT COMMON.

I got this information from the AKC Labrador Retriever Breed Standard website... your dog's eyes are fine!:
"Eyes--Kind, friendly eyes imparting good temperament, intelligence and alertness are a hallmark of the breed. They should be of medium size, set well apart, and neither protruding nor deep set. Eye color should be brown in black and yellow Labradors, and brown or hazel in chocolates. Black, or yellow eyes give a harsh expression and are undesirable. Small eyes, set close together or round prominent eyes are not typical of the breed. Eye rims are black in black and yellow Labradors; and brown in chocolates. Eye rims without pigmentation is a disqualification."

I have a 3 month old chocolate lab with hazel eyes that look greenish in certain light.  According to AKC; "yellow and black labs should have brown eyes.  Chocolate labs may have brown or hazel eyes.  Black or yellow eyes give a harsh expression and are undesirable". My interpretation of "hazel" is to include green.  Webster's 20th Century Dictionary, 2nd Ed. defines hazel eyes as:
"light reddish-brown or yellowish-brown; hazel eyes usually include flecks of green or Gray"
It seems that eyes that look green would be desirable and acceptable by AKC since hazel eyes are comprised of flecks of green or Gray.

Yellow labs can have green eyes. It would be called a DUDLEY.
What is a Dudley?  You're going to get different answers from different people.  According to "The New Bulldog" by Col. Bailey C. Hanes, 5th Edition, pg. 34, Published 1991 by Howell Book House, Macmillan Publishing Company; "The term
'Dudley' dates back to 1877 to a magnificent, under fifty pounds specimen
named Lord Dudley, who had this liver-colored pigmentation of the nose and lips.
The fault was not outlawed at the time, and the dog was much used at stud,
transmitting the fault to his progeny. Some strains show this faulty coloration of the nose and lips much more than do other strains, but 'Dudleys' may result from any breeding. It should be stressed that 'Dudleys' are disqualified from competition."
Now, remember, the origins referred to the Bulldog with liver pigment. In other breeds, it has come to mean non-pigmented, as it does in the Standard for the Labrador.
Many say a yellow with liver pigment is a Dudley. It depends on the person and their definitions. The AKC describes it as flesh colored. In Anna Katherine Nichols book of the Labrador Retriever, written in 1983, the Dudley nose is defined as flesh colored.
The AKC standard states:
The DQ for pigment reads, "A thoroughly pink nose or one lacking in any pigment."

In the Canadian standard, it states that the yellow's pigment is black or dark brown. Anything else is a serious fault (as the Dudley nose in the US had been throughout history).
So the term "Dudley" is up to interpretation as with most other things in dogs.

The dog could not be shown, but the lack of pigment does NOT mean it can't still be a beloved pet or that it has health problems.

How old is the puppy? It is perfectly possible for the eyes to have been blue, then changed to green, they may still be turning. My Chocolate lab had blue eyes until she was about 8 weeks, then they changed to green for another three weeks, and now they are this very pretty yellow tinged color. Her father was yellow though, her mother chocolate.

The breeder supplied AKC registration papers, and information about the parents. What does this mean? Is she really a purebred lab? Any help would be much appreciated.

It is not the breed standard for yellow's to have green eyes and light colored nose and eye skin. Green eyes are more sensitive to the sun and the light colored skin does not reflect glare off of water therefore the dog may lose sight of the game.

Eyes--Kind, friendly eyes imparting good temperament, intelligence and alertness are a hallmark of the breed. Eye rims without pigmentation is a disqualification.

everyone except Michele is right. my chocolate lab has green eyes and she is a very healthy and exeptionally good dog. I looked it up online and asked a vet. She said most choco labs should and do have green eyes.

Yes, its OK for a Chocolate lab to have green eyes. All puppies have blue eyes when born, some chocolates turn green while other turn darker.

I wouldn't have a chocolate Labrador without green eyes! I love them! My friend has a chocolate with green and another chocolate with blue! She has won several competitions over the last two years and recently was offered $4000.00 for the male with green eyes! Green is rare and you should be proud as well as happy!

yes this is fairly commmon. my chocolate labrador has green-blue eyes. when chocolate labs are born sometimes their eyes seem transparent. this can disappear within a few weeks but it is acceptable for the chocolate colours to have green or blue eyes.

peace

I am a judge for the a.k.c. and green eyes are a perfectly okay for a chocolate lab.  However disqualification would happen if it has no pigment to it's nose and gums.

We recently just bought a yellow lab puppy with a light brown nose and the prettiest green eyes I have ever seen. I asked the guy about her eyes because I've never seen a lab with green eyes and he said that green eyes is common in black labs and that her brothers are black which is why she probably got the trate. she is gorgeous! I tried to find other dogs on google, pictures at least of Labs with green eyes and I only found 1 and it was more of a yellow then a green.

I have a white chocolate Lab, ok not a recognized color but that's what we call him. Both parents are labs, his mom is a yellow and dad chocolate. my dog is yellow (light cream color) with brown nose and eyes. He is undesired by breeders and in the show ring he would be disqualified for the lack of pigment (I was told otherwise a beautiful dog). But I love him to bits and pieces and that's all he cares.
