Both of my dogs got lighter with age. Of course they were a different breed so I don't know.

Your chocolate will stay dark chocolate even when he gets older. Actually I prefer the dark over the light washed out chocolates. I breed my chocolates to blacks every so often to keep the deep dark chocolate or it will soon fade if you breed chocolate to chocolate continuously.

We have a black (so black she's black blue)lab who's mother was chocolate and father was black.  she has siblings that were dark chocolate.  They were more disarible to people than the lighter ones (around here).  I stay in touch with the owners of the chocolate ones and they stayed dark.
