What colour are ruby dogs when they are born? Do they start off a light colour (like a Golden Retriever) then darken?

My 5 month old ruby is already much darker than the light brown she was at 8 wks.  She appears to be getting darker still and the red is starting to show in her dark brown coat.

I have a beautiful Ruby and She is very dark red -  almost like a setter.  She was born paler. Now her longer coat is much paler and the short coat has stayed dark (almost like some Afghans)  She holds on to the lighter coat because she is spade - therefore the nickname brushalot.  The only requirement for Ruby dogs is that they have NO white markings.  There is no requirement in the standard for the shade of red.  If you want a dark red, you have to have a good breeder and be able to look at the parents.  Hopefully they will be able to go back a few generations.  But then again, don't be afraid of that ruby from two black and tan parents.  Most of my dog's legacy is black and tan.  It's complicated.  That's why you need a VERY good breeder who is knowledgeable about whole colors.

Our female ruby is a deep red and has been since birth. She is now 8 months old and I have noted no significant change in the intensity of her color. Her mother is a gorgeous champion ruby and her father is a champion blenheim. We spent several months selecting a breeder and a year waiting for a puppy, and it was worth the wait. I echo the comments by "Brushalot": a good breeder is essential - and for reasons far more important than color.
