Yes all dogs knows how to swim.  If you have a small dog put some water in your tub and let the water run, then lift your dog over the bath tub and hold him still. He will start paddling is paws, it's a natural thing for a dog.

Since labs are for retrieving, their coats were made for swimming. They are practically waterproof! Dogs learn how to swim instantly and naturally. If you put them in water where they can't reach the bottom in they will instinctively kick and it teaches them to swim right on the spot. They are very smart and right away learn how to stay up and move. However it is a good idea to,as ERIC said, get them used to water in the bathtub first so they don't freak out and become afraid of it.

I know we are talking about Labs here, but heard a story from my Physical Therapist that "Boxer's" are not good swimmers!  So don't throw them in your pool like some friends did to theirs!

With Labs being prone to hip problems, swimming is a good exercise for them.

Thanks!
