i have a golf 18 gl n reg and when i try to start it it starts for a few second and then cuts out does anyone know the answer

It sounds like it could be the mass air flow sensor.  That is the box attached to your air filter inside the air box.  My 1.8 did the same when mine went out.  For your sake I hope I am wrong because it is like a $500 part.  It is a very easy fix though.  Good luck
