Cavalier King Charles Spaniels normally are no taller than 13 to 14 inches at their withers (top of shoulders).  If your dog is no taller than that, then 29 lbs. is severely overweight.  A Cavalier at 14 inches should weigh no more than 22 lbs.  It is important to keep Cavaliers slim because nearly all of them do or will suffer from a terminal heart defect, mitral valve disease (MVD), and too much weight puts an unnecessary strain on the dog's weakened heart.

I agree with Marvin.  My Cavalier died of MVD.  My dog's heart just gave out one night.  She died in my lap.  She was four years old and had MVD for two years.  She just couldn't breathe any more.  She wasn't overweight, but the cardiologist warned us to not overfeed her.  She weighed about fifteen pounds.

we have a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel who weighs about 40 lbs!  He seems tall for a Cavalier.  We wonder if he is purebred.  We paid for a purebred.  He loves to eat and is active and healthy.  He is Big, Jeanne.

It is likely that your dog is not a pure cavalier. Unscrupulous breeders sometimes mix this breed with others, such as the Brittany, in order to produce larger litters. Just because it is AKC registered does not mean the breeder was honest. I would suggest taking your dog to a reputable breeder and ask.

Our 5 year old Cavalier weighs 27 1/2 pounds. We got her from a very reputable breeder. She's  not fat - just a big girl

The cavalier is a relatively new breed in the United States and I see many variations of the breed. The cavalier should be 12 to 13 inches at the withers and the weight should be proportionate to the height, between 13 and 18 pounds. This is a Toy dog!A cavalier can develop MVP at any stage in their live, but it does not mean it will develop this desease. Good exercise and diet will maintain a good health.

Ditto what "bthode" suggested: I would seriously wonder if the dog is truly a purebred Cavalier. If she looks well-proportioned for her height/weight, I would be highly suspicious that she is not a purebred Cav.

Also, while MVD is common in this breed, primarily because of unscrupulous breeding as has been mentioned above, it is possible to get a pup that is certified MVD-free. Our breeder has all of her pups examined by both a canine cardiologist and canine ophthalmologist before they are placed but she also strictly adheres to CKCS Club guidelines for breeding and none of her dogs has ever had a heritable health problem. She gave us our dog's family tree going back something like 5 generations. We got a pup from the last litter that her championship mother will be allowed to have because of the breeding restrictions. When we first started looking into getting a Cavalier, our vet advised us to seek out a reputable breeder and make sure the pup had both a heart and eye certificate. We followed his advice and although we had to wait a year, our little one is a healthy bundle of joy. Incidently, a local breeder was offering pups at half the price we paid, but we know of someone who got a puppy from them and now the puppy is having both heart and eye troubles and sadly for them, they are expecting to have to put the dog down in the next few months.

I have a four year old Cavalier.  She is the prettiest thing, but she is very grumpy and mean.  She dominates my other dogs and growls at me if I try to move her around.  She also likes to attack me and bite while she is growling.  I think she enjoys it because she doesn't bite to hurt, but a stranger looking on would probably think she had rabies or something.  Does anyone else have a Cavalier with a bad personality?

Hi
I'm getting a king Charles spaniel tomorrow. He is in really poor condition, but he weighs about 30lbs! Its actually a e sad story was not taken care of very well. He lived in the backyard and was never groomed. Feces was stuck to he behind to the point where he could not go to the bathroom. He will be taken care of though, as i am typing this he is at the groomers getting groomed and neutered. He also is getting his ears cleaned out because he has a terrible ear infection.
Do you know a good ear cleaning brand?

I have a King Charles who is about 15-16" tall.  She weighs between 25-26 lbs.  I see all of these sites that say they are supposed to 12 or 13 inches tall.  I know she is a pure bred because my vet who knows these dogs told me she is.  Are there different types of breeds that can be a bit bigger than the normal King Charles?

It seems like you guys are feeding him way to much! See, that is a problem to the heart. What you can do is either go to the vet, and see if it is a purebred, or just don't feed her as much.

I have a 2 year old 42 pound pure-bred Cavalier and have seen and heard of others a similar size. We don't overfeed him, but he is probably 5 pounds overweight. Pure-bred Cavaliers of this size are rare.
