    I get the following error: 
  929: 1: ... -2: warning: couldn't open database.syn -translation disabled.
    Is this a bad thing? 

    No it just tells you, that a file database.syn could not be found 
    and therefore the synonym table is empty. If you did not intend to 
    use synonym tables, you are perfect ok.
