-16- Can I use the serial port for HP printers with Impressario?

No. Only builtin parallel ports (and in some cases, an HP JetDirect
interface) can be used. Note that some older SGI systems do not have a
  builtin parallel port.

The hinv(1M) command can be used to see if the system has a parallel
  port.

Also, the 8-pin "serial" port on newer HP printers is *not* compatible with
any SGI workstation or server. The port is used for LocalTalk connections to
  Macintosh computers.
