Originally called the Inventor VRML, this format has evolved into what is now the VRML format. VRML is also called a "Markup Language" for reasons that it is used in a fashion similar to HTML (HyperText Markup Language), but for rendering 3D graphics rather than text. VRML, however, is in no way derived from HTML.
