You can set a passwd to more than 8 characters but anything over eight are ignored. No messages or warnings are given. Be careful if you're running NIS. You probably want to limit passwords to 8 char on all machines (6000 and others) to be compatible. Someone mentioned that DCE supports kerberos which supports passwords greater than 8 characters.
