Recently someone wrote a new FAQ for alt-usage-english-FAQ; as usual with such
duplicates where one isn't replacing the other, I arranged to give new archive
names to both, in this case usage/english/original and .../faq, respectively.
However, the webmaster of the corresponing newsgroup wanted there to be
*something* at the old archive name, since hundreds of google links point
to the faqs.org copy, so it gets listed first in searches. Together we
decided to put together the following (see end of message). What's different
about it is that this is the first time I've ever put something in the
archives that is intended never to be posted. We've resisted doing so in the
past; I'm writing to see if there's any consensus on
a) letting this never-posted FAQ stand, or
b) insisting that the webmaster post it once in a while to the
alt.usage.english newsgroup (in which case he'd need to reword it a bit)
