I don't know which countries you are talking about, but in all
countries that have signed the Berne convention, all new works are
automatically copyrighted(*) unless explicitly placed into the public
domain. This covers text as well as most other mediums.

Signatories to the Berne convention definitely include the US, all EU
countries, and almost all other industrialised countries.

(*) I know that works prepared by US government employees in this role
    are automatically public domain. I do not know if they are
    required to attach a note to this effect to the work, or if there
    is an exception for this case.
