I've been posting one of these "pointers to" which is actually not
being posted to *.answers (at least not yet) because I haven't figured
out a good way to alternate between the actual FAQ (which actually I
have never posted to a newsgroup yet) and the pointer message (which
goes out to news.admin.net-abuse.email and comp.mail.misc every 11
days at present).
At one point, somebody suggested that I get the FAQ included at RTFM
and list that as a distribution point, but +not+ post the actual FAQ
to the newsgroups. This sort of appeals to me, but I can't find any
instructions for how to do this. It doesn't make much sense to me to
post the FAQ +only+ to news.answers and comp.answers, although I guess
this would effectively amount to more or less the same thing.
(Maybe I misunderstood and the idea was merely to get the FAQ -- or
the pointer -- listed in the LoPIP.)
To me, it seems that the whole point with a pointer (gack :-) is to
not have to post the actual FAQ to a group where it's tangential at
best. (comp.mail.misc is full of stuff that is tangential at best, of
course, so it'd be in good company there, I suppose ... NANAE is just
full :-) whereas I think it would certainly be useful to be able to
have the FAQ available from RTFM nevertheless. Is this possible
somehow?

Mine is tentatively mail/procmail-faq-pointer (oh no) but I guess I
should change that.
If anybody wants to have a look, the relevant material is at
<http://www.iki.fi/~era/procmail/pointer.txt> (pointer message)
<http://www.iki.fi/~era/procmail/mini-faq.html> (actual FAQ)
<http://www.iki.fi/~era/procmail/mini-faq.txt> (text rendering)
<http://www.iki.fi/~era/procmail/links.html> (companion page)
I've been putting off all of this because I can't decide which way it
should be.
Perhaps I should give in and just post the FAQ (say) every 37 days to
*.answers as well as the groups that the pointer goes to, and not care
that the pointer and the FAQ will sometimes go out on more or less the
same date? (Or perhaps I should even switch and have the pointer go to
*.answers and the FAQ only to the "target" groups? Nah, that doesn't
make sense.)
Thoughts, comments?
