Most of us aren't paid to maintain the FAQs. We do them because we want
to share our information with others (besides just aiding in lowering the
traffic:noise ratio). I agree with David in that if you plan not to help
people answer specific questions, you should put a disclaimer on your FAQ
that says, "Further queries about this subject not already found in this
FAQ should be posted to the foo.bar newsgroup." In fact, I have a friend
of mine who does something similar with his Disneyland guide. People
email him and say "I read your lovely guide, but my family is going to
Disneyland tomorrow and we want you to write us a personalized touring
plan for us." Obviously, some things are not realistic at all. However on
the most part, as the FAQ maintainer you will be seen as the "wise one"
to whom others will come for answers.
I don't recall what FAQ the first person maintained. But how many of us
are "bombarded"? If you are repeatedly getting the same questions, that
might be a sign that you need to answer that question in your FAQ (which
after all, DOES stand for "Frequently Asked Questions").
