I'm pretty picky, too, and I keep mine almost excactly the same way,
although since my tags aren't as sophisticated, I add a makefile and a
perl script to add some common headers and footers. If anybody's
interested, the (documented) perl script I use to generate the
versions (and info on several other options, as well) is available
from David A. Lamb's page of FAQ Maintenance Aids,
