< AUTHORIZATION FORMULA
< =====================
I'm familiar with this stuff, s.b., so I took just a quick glance at
it if I found something unusual.
< I am the original author and I am authorized by all contributors of the
< named file to sign this formula.
This is enough for me to _not_ honor the request, although I would
like to. Technically, all contributors' email addresses are in the
FAQ, but to contact them all and obtain permission would take far too
long. And what if someone refuses?
The rest of the letter is even more boring legalese (German influence?
:-) than the familiar requests for putting my "ircle" program on
software collection CD-ROMs. I get astonishingly many of the latter,
which I either reply to with "it's all in there, the program is under
GPL" or don't reply at all (if someone asks for unacceptable terms and
conditions, like an obligation on my part for taking some kind of
rather extensive warranty - don't laugh, I've gotten such requests.
People should read the GPL.)
Seems we just get into another redistribution policy debate, but
apparently this is necessary. :-( How about this one (from
dreams-faq/part4):
| Subject: FAQ Redistribution policy
|
| Finally, an apparently necessary small note about this FAQ in general:
| I don't object against redistributing this document on BBSs, CDs or
| other media, but if you do so, leave the text and identification info
| unadulterated. In particular, distribute all the parts at once, leave
| the "Revision" header lines intact, don't delete any references to the
| various authors of the text, don't arbitrarily shorten the text. If
| you make any kind of excerpts, make sure to get the reference to the
| author correct (esp. for parts 3 and 4). -ot
|
I deliberately chose "unadulteraded" (okay, not a well-defined or
legal term) as opposed to "unchanged" because I rather specifically do
not object to efforts such as Tom Fine's WWW server. Of course, I have
no idea of the format changes apparently needed for this CD, but my
idea is that the content is what matters, not the format.
Of course, I'd rather prefer the CD makers to read such paragraphs
themselves instead of mass-mailing the authors. :-) But the general
idea is, I like maximum dissemination of useful info, so I formulate
my policies as liberal as possible and distributors should take it or
leave it. (I'd really prefer them to take it...)
Just a few random thoughts,
olaf
