Most FAQs are the indexes/glossaries/table-of-contents of a newsgroup.
Occasionally the subject of a newsgroup is so large that one or more
"special interest" FAQs appear. My FAQ is just such a FAQ.

I maintain a special interest FAQ on the newsgroup comp.graphics for
graphics file formats. Not image processing, animations, or how to create
the effects in Jurassic Park. The scope is only file formats that store
graphical data. A very narrow topic, but one that is deep with information.

My authority to do this FAQ is 1) I have written a popular book on the
subject, and 2) in my last 10 years of reading comp.graphics I have seen
no one else foolish enough to attempt such a monumental FAQ.

My FAQ has been out for six months now and in that time I have only received
praise and helpful suggestions from my narrow readership within the Usenet
community. I guess that for every person that contacts me I must have an
additional 2000-3000 readers that never will (more if you count all the
readers of off-net FAQ archives, such as on BBSs and CD-ROM buyers).

I guess that my point is I took a shot at supplying information on an
unsupported niche subject on a newsgroup and it has payed off
as being very useful in providing people (graphics programmers) with
much needed information.

And yes, I did notice that the poster requested that replies on this thread
be emailed to him, but I just couldn't pass up a soapbox to orate my place
in the netiverse.
