USENET or Usenet

Folks,

Last week, I posted the following item, but have not received any
definitive answers. So, please forgive me for intruding on your
mailboxes, but I'd figure if you folks, if anybody, might know the
answer.

What is the official case of Usenet/USENET? I'm writing a book and
want to do the "right thing" rather than propagate a lie.

It's confusing: in the original RFC (850/1036), Mark uses USENET,
but in the son-of-1036, Henry uses Usenet. In common usage, there
seems to be about a 50/50 split.

If you have "proof" or "authority" to back up your claim, so much
the better, but opinions would also be useful (please explain
reasoning).

Please send email and I'll summarize to news.admin.misc.

Perhaps it would be best to put the answer, if it exists, in the
Usenet FAQ in news.announce.newusers.
