This is exactly the same problem the music industry is facing because
of the proliferation of sampling. The rock group Negativland has had
some thoughts on the subject of copyright; I could see if I could dig
up some of their essays if anyone's interested. Alternatively, listen
to "The Letter U and the Numeral 2", extracts from the "Over The Edge"
radio show "Crosley Bendix discusses the Copyright Act".
