Morally maybe but not legally. A Usenet convention has held no water in front
a judge to date that I am aware of.
Where's that soapbox...
I find all this just a little silly. I've said it before and I'll repeat
myself yet again. Everyone seems to be taking themselves and the value
of their FAQs much to seriously.
Books have been sold on the contents of postings to comp.sources.misc,
dedicated books. Should I as the proactive moderator and archive maintainer
request dollars for the contents of my newsgroup ? (For those who are still
thinking about it, the answer is no.)
I have INFormational files that are posted periodicly that are my original
works and take time. Should I restrict access to that information just because
it is to appear in another forum ? (Again, my answer is no.) It seems to
me that in the spirit of USENET, the information is being made available
to better the community, not my personal bank account. I have a job for
that. I moderate and update FAQs because I want to help. I've heard alot
of talk that sounds as "sided" concerning "ownership" of net information
in some "packaged" form as the publishers willing to try to make a buck
off it. There is value in what they do. Not everyone understands this
environment or where to get the information they need. Books such as
the kind you are lowering to the value of grocrery store tabloids may seem
that to a net.veteran but to a newbie, are a boon to their education.
And no, I am not currently writing one.
Reality check is over... Let the flames begin.
