The only thing I can think of is auto-generating INDEX-ish files using the
"Summary:" line or something, then mangle the names... I mean there's some cases
where 14 characters just won't be useful.

I'm NOT saying to throw out the current scheme, it would be horrible to make
everyone live with 14 character file names, but perhaps a second set of files or
an alternate tree structure on news.answers that gets generated automatically
for people on generally 'challenged' operating systems.

I know something like this may mean updating the news.answers archiving
software, but at least the problem becomes centralized (ie. it can be fixed at
one location: news.answers).
