What do you write FAQ's for ? Profit or the good of the community they serve ?
A service is being provided that costs him money to provide. He is only trying
to provide the service. To those who are not Internet connected and who may
be on the end of a UUCP link or have a small news spool partition, he is
supplying a great service.
The net is huge and the amount of unique data is growing rapidly. He has
organized information to make it easier to be dealt with as well as find.
Not everyone is as well connected as many of us. If he is providing the FAQ's
unaltered he is just retransmitting them. UUNET retransmits FAQs for a price,
my site retransmits them to other news sites for free. I have an archive on
my disk of news.answers that I let the world come and get. I consider all of
those a service.
You are getting your name and efforts put in front of the people who buy the
CDs. And his prices are quite acceptable. (I know from past experience.)
Information collection and delivery is a growing business sector and not just
in Internet related information. The amount of time and effort that it would
take on his part to get permission would make the business too slow and
expensive. Does Compuserve or AOL have to have your permission before allowing
their subscribers access to your FAQ's ? Why is a CD all that different ?
