This is because the standard NNTP protocol does not require login.  You may be inquiring about USENET Authentication.  In that case, the authentication commands are as follows:
AUTHINFO USER <username>
AUTHINFO PASS <password>

But note, this it not part of RFC977.  It is a server dependent command.
