I trained my dog by giving him a little treat when he went to the door and went potty and I took them out every hr also 15 min after they ate. I also just got a 1 1/2yr old shih-tzu who was neglected and kept outside and that has worked with potty training her. They are very smart dogs and catch on quickly, but you have to be consistent.

Let me tell you!!! I have had Woogy (pure bread shih tzu) for 5 years now. I STILL cannot say that he is house broken. He still goes poop when I leave, out of spite. He is 5 years old now and although he has gotten better, he still goes poop in the house. It is so bad that when I get home, you can obviously tell that he pushed his poop out just because I left him by himself. (even though I just took him out right before I left) When he was young, I tried the crate (which he pooped in and rolled around in) I am home with him most of the time and was very consistent with his training, still, didn't work.

I am in the process of housebreaking a Shih Tzu and the clerk at PetCo gave us an idea that so far is working.  We hung bells from the door knob, and every time we take him out we shake the bells.  Within' a day or so Gus got the hang of it, and now when he wants to go outside he shakes the bells.  We also give him a small treat when we get back in if he did his business outside, and we don't give him a treat if he doesn't do it.  This seems to be working so far.  Good Luck

I have a 10 week old shih tzu i've owned for nearly two weeks now. The crate training/scheduling outdoor housebreaking had been working about 50% of the time, but he was not cooperting with my roommates when i wasn't home AT ALL. On a whim yesterday, I purchased a Purina Second Nature dog litter kit, and when i tried to get him to use the litter box, he would head toward the door that leads outside and whine, letting me know that he wanted to go outside. I got rid of the litter box, and today he has been letting me know when he has to go by scratching at the door. I let him out, he goes, and comes right back in. Amazing! I spent like $30.00 on that thing, and now he appears to be housebroken to go outside. Just goes to show you that this breed can be ridid, and that it is important for us as owners to be consistent.

I have two shih tzu puppies!! Let me tell you how much fun that is to potty train.  They are some what trained to the potty pad, but I don't want to change "diapers" for the rest of my life. I am not sure if crate training is right because of seperating them, and when I take them outside they just want to play with eachother. I think they are great, but harder than I was hoping for in a dog.

Our Shih Tzu is 4 years old.  He lives with a 4 year old fully housebroken Boxer.  He is not even remotely housebroken.  We recently took him to a dog behavioral specialist (after confirming there was nothing physical wrong) and her assessment is that is was a dominance issue.  We have been restricting his freedom (leashed to me almost 24/7) and he is doing better!  He is not stealing his sister's bed. He is not urinating and defecating everywhere and he is sleeping better at night.  Who knew he just needed to understand that he is not the ultimate boss.

Pepper was rescued from the local animal shelter. He is 5 yrs old. I'll admit I was fairly warned about his potty problem (It was the reason that the previous owners gave him up). It wasn't bad at first and was actually non-existent for a few months. Then My brother came and stayed for a few weeks and was his primary potty buddy. Pepper never had a problem while my brother was staying. Now that my brother is gone Pepper has gotten worse. A LOT worse! He never makes any of his usual signs that he needs to go out and will sneak to a certain spot in our main hallway (fortunately tiled) and will do his business. If we put the doggie gate up so he cannot get to the hall he will go everywhere! I am strongly opposed to "crate-training" I think it unfair and cruel to lock him up when we never have before. My husband and I also work 40 hrs. a week each so I need something that will work quickly. I have tried a lot of common methods but I am open to all suggestions! (except crate training)
