You can tell if your CV Joints have gone bad if when you turn your steering wheel you hear a loud clicking sound.  If your steering wheel is getting stuck...they have gone REALLY bad and you might want to get that serviced.

I have a 1993 Jeep Cherokee Laredo.  When I turn the wheel sharp it is almost like a belt slipping and you can hear and feel the slipping in the steering wheel.  The steering has not locked because I am careful not to turn it to hard.  Is this dangerous or will it cause something else to break?   Will it be expensive to fix and is it usually both or just one side?

CV joints are found only in front wheel drive vehicles. These Constant Velocity joints are very important to keep in good condition. You should have the boots checked whenever the wheels are removed from your car, for whatever reason. This way you can catch problems before they get too bad (read: too expensive).  If you have a front wheel drive car, and your joints are bad, you will hear a click-click-click when making sharp turns. One or both sides can go bad. It is highly dangerous to leave CV joints unrepaired. You can drop an axle--use your imagination to see what happens next. Rebuilt parts are cheaper and often come with a warranty.

Seems to me you have to replace the secondary recipricating valve on your chp body. when you do this be sure not to bend the ghf shaft because you could get a major problem in the jkf houseing.

The loud clunking sound could also be wheel bearings. They usually especially click when turning, or when hitting a slight bump in the road. Get them checked out, just incase.

all the c.v joint rebuilders are a "pickpockets".......yes!
in a damaged c.v joint they only change the ball bearings , they polish a little the internal races and thatīs it!
they charge to the costumer more than $30 -40 or 50 or 6o bucks!
here is an example:
IF THE DAMAGED C.V JOINT USE A 23/32 BALL BEARING SIZE.......THEY POLISH THE INTERNAL RACES , THEY CLEAN THE USED GREASE , PUT NEW GREASE AND PUT NEW BALL BEARINGS SIZE 23/32 +.0045 AND.....PRESTO!!!!!READY!
THE C.V JOINT WILL BE READY TO SPIN ONCE AGAIN IN THE ROAD!
23/32=18.25 mm ( ORIGINAL FROM FACTORY SIZE)
23/32+.0045= 18.37mm ( REPLACEMENT OVERSIZE)

THIS OVERSIZE COVERS PERFECT THE WEARING INSIDE THE C.V JOINT.
REMEMBER THIS: " THE SECRET IS IN THE BALL"

check your track rod ends. a simple test is to try and shake the wheel with the car stationary and the engine off. the wheel should be solid. if it 'shoogles' around its probably track rods

To abbi, dont you see you are posting your question in the wrong place, go to http://www.faqs.org/qa/fqa261.html and select submit question to FAQ; but anyway, the LOUD clonking noise tells me is more an engine mount or transmission mount. If you have the chance, verify that all rubber and connectors from the exhaust are fine. When they go bad the exhaust hits against the chassis and makes the sound. When the car is accelerated the engine has some play (on purpose to prevent vibration) and it moves the exhaust even if you dont notice it, if one of the muffler mounts are bad it will make weird noises. What worries me is that you say is ALL the TIME. Can you be more specific, like at all rpms, at all speeds, going up hill, highway only...etc???

Constant velocity (CV) joints are found in all kinds of vehicles, _not_ just front wheel drive cars. A noise heard while turning left or right usually indicates an outer joint is failing; a vibration upon acceleration typically indicates a worn inner joint. Your safety as a driver, and the safety of others around you, depends greatly on keeping your car in good shape. Rebuilt axles are often available at a fraction of the cost of a new axle, so you owe it to yourself to look into repairing your CV joint problems.
Cheers!

CV joints are found in a variety of vehicles. My RWD Lexus, my AWD Grand Cherokee, and my FWD Prelude all have CV joints. CV joints are not exclusive to FWD or independent suspension cars.

I have a 93' Nissan Maxima and every time I turn left it feels like something is grinding.  I've noticed it wasn't my wheel rubbing.  It also makes a kind of thumping or clicking noise. Would this be my cv joint.

You can tell if your CV joints are starting to get bad if you hear a clicking when you turn your vehicle. The worse they get the louder the clicking will get. Usually if the right side CV joint is gone you'll hear it when you turn your car left and vice versa. A good way to check it is if you jack the front end of your car completely off the ground, turn your wheels hard to either the left or right, get someone to jam a bar between the floor and the tire to stop tire from moving, get in car when tire is jammed, press brake and accelerate you should be able to tell what cv joint is gone by doing this.

QUESTION: My CV joints have been bad for at least 5 months now. Every time I make a sharp left turn it sounds like a loud creaking noise coming from the back area. I have been told to get it repaired asap, but I do not have the money as of now. Can this problem wait for just a few more weeks?

Yes, the clicking sounds nears the wheels refers to the CV joints. We should get them changed to avoid serious troubles.

The other day, I was pulling into a parking lot and the entrance is angled and sloped.  I was turning left as I pulled in the entrance and I heard a loud clunk sound then as I drove about 15 more feet I heard it again.  I got out and looked, but didn't see anything (I wouldn't know what to be looking for anyway.) But, it sounds as if it's coming from the back driver's side tire.  It doesn't do it all the time, but when I go over some bumps it's like something is loose and I hear it moving.  I only hear the loud clunks once in awhile and it's when I'm going straight down the road and not when I'm turning.  Someone told me this is the CV Joint.  I have no idea, but thought I would ask.  Any ideas?  If it is that, how long can it go without being fixed?  I have to drive nearly 50 miles to/from work Mon-Fri and just want to know if I shouldn't be driving it at all.  Thanks.

It is true that CV joints are on the front on front wheel drive cars. The rear on rear wheel drive cars can also have CV joints, unless the rear suspension is a solid straight axle (i.e. like you would see on pickup trucks, large older SUVs, e.g. Jeep Cherokees, Ford Explorers, older Ford F-150s, etc).  It is the suspension design which dictates whether or not the rear will have CV joints.  Independent rear suspensions will most likely have CV joints.

yes it is your CV joints most likely. when CV joints get bad enough, it will click constantly no matter when turning or not. and eventually it will affect the driving ability of the car. the steering wheel may shake at any speed.  alot of times the CV joint will end up breaking, and then the axle will fly around inside the steering nuckle. if your lucky, it will only lose its ability to drive the wheel, and you will just not get power to that wheel.

but yes abbi it is your CV joint. a junk yard will usually have a used or rebuilt CV joint  anywhere from $40 to $100

it would definately be your cv joint.. im thinking your half shaft is broken right in 2 at the boot and should be replaced asap. this pretty much means the bearings are gone and theres 2 shafts grinding against each other all the time.

Constant Velocity Joints (aka homokinetic or CV joints) allow a rotating shaft to transmit power through a variable angle, at constant rotational speed, without an appreciable increase in friction or play. They are mainly used in front wheel drive and all wheel drive cars. However, rear wheel drive cars with independent rear suspensions typically use CV joints at the ends of the rear axle halfshafts. Audi Quattros use them for all four half-axles and on the front-to-rear driveshaft (propeller shaft) as well, for a total of ten CV joints.
