let me pull out my sXe dictionary *sarcasm* there are no rules or an exact definition to sXe... the basic principle of sXe is
no (promiscuous) sex
no drugs
no alcohol

whether you take it to the next level and choose not to drink caffeine or to live a vegan/vegetarian lifestyle is up to you

Here is the best answer for this question you may ever find:

illegal drugs are illegal for a reason. straight edge is more often than not based on the ideal and reasoning behind the consumption and participation of or with certain substances and activities. if one is consuming drugs or alcohol specifically for the effects of the drugs or alcohol, he or she is clearly going against common straight edge morals. however, straight edgers choose to abstain from casual/premarital sex, drugs, tobacco and alcohol for the sole purpose of remaining what WE may choose to call "clean" or "pure". while many straight edge-rs choose to abstain from caffeine as well, those who don't will certainly tell you that their choice to consume caffeinated food products is backed with the understanding that their consumption includes no objectives such as mental fulfillment, intentional brain alteration, or a want or will to "feel" any certain way. to sum things up, straight edge-rs who consume caffeine do it because, well, some food or drink includes caffeine, and they aren't "using it" to fuel any wants or needs other than hunger or thirst.



in short, there is no yes or no, but what it really boils down to is the individual and his or her thoughts regarding the issue.

sxe is indeed against drugs being those that are illegal or even over dosing the item. caffeine is not illegal but is NOT at all sxe if trying to overdose caffeine as an illegal drug. caffeine is many sxe ANTI-Drug although it being a drug its not illegal in any terms.
