If Gasoline is soluble in nonpolar solvents, why isn't classified as a lipid?

gasoline is a mix of different fractions of petroleum hydrocarbons.

they are nonpolar.

lipids display less affinity for water than nonpolars but can form emulsions.

that doesnt explain much to you, i suppose...

Strictly speaking, lipids are of course usually soluble in non-polar solvents. As is gasoline. That does not mean that gasoline is a lipid any more than salt is a sugar-both are soluble in polar solvents.

Lipids are characterized by being a class of compounds known as "tri-glycerides". 3 fatty acid molecules hooked up to glycerol. Breaking this down to fatty esters and glycerol is the basis of turning used cooking fat into diesel fuel.
