I have a six month old Bichon Female. We tried buying all the stuff in the stores to clean her eyes, but non of them really worked.  Our vet told us the best thing is a cotton ball and warm water.  Also it really helped that when we had her groomed the groomer but around her eyes really short that way the stuff doesn't stick and therefore no stains. Brandy our Bichon is stain free now. We still clean her when we see stuff coming out but no stains. You can also ask your vet about a procedure that involves flushing of their eye ducts. This procedure I have heard can be very effective but there is no guarentee.
Good luch

We changed our Bichon's diet to cooked chicken and rice, plus supplemental vitamins and minerals and the stains disappeared.

yes, using warm water and your fingernails is a great way. It wont hurt the animal too much either.....trust me it works....i have hydro-bathed many animals and this includes cleaning that gunk from their eyes....try it :)

My miracle worker was Crystal Eyes by Four Paws (found where pet supplies are sold).  A little on a cotton ball applied to the stained area (don't get it in their eyes)ever so often along w/ grooming  worked wonders and finally no more tear stains.

Our groomer suggested 1/2 regular strength tums twice a day when my puppy was 12 weeks old- stains were gone in 2 weeks!! We kept him on this dosage and has beautiful eyes.
