Some Yorkie'sears do not stand and remain floppy. My mom's Yorkie has floppy ears... he's very cute. Sometimes the hair on the tips of the ears weighs them down. A groomer can shave down this hair and they will stand up again if they can.

I also have an 11 week old yorkie who's ears flop.  You may want to try shaving his ears and taping them with medical tape for about a week.  This should make them stand, or at least, it is working for my Alex.  Good luck.

your Yorkies ears will stand on there own as long as it's not 6 months of age. Some Yorke's ears fall down while they're teething and may need to be supported with tape and a supporter. But first shave the inside and the back of the ears (half way on the back)and leave tape for one week. Then whether the ear are standing or not remove for a few hour and then tape them again for three days.(They need to be supported so that the cartilage will get stronger.) Good luck.

I breed yorkies, and it's incorrect to assume that they will go up on their own.   If a yorkie'sears are not up by 4 months or so, they may never stay up since the cartilage will grow that way.   It's best to begin shaving the ears as early as six weeks old, and continue until they stand up by themselves.  Occasionally it may also be necessary to to begin taping them.

You have to shave the ears and tape them up or they won't ever stick up.  They don't go up on their own.

I'm not a breeder but a Yorkie owner.  My breeder advised me to not tape my Yorkies ears because it could cut the circulation of the ear.  One of her champion Yorkies had to undergo surgery and had her ears removed because of taping.

My yorkie is almost a year old. He is not yet fixed and has not changed colors. He is still black and gold with some parts of his ears gray. His ears flopped down at about 6 mos and never came back up??? What's the deal? I read somewhere that when they go through puberty or teeth they can go down. Will they go up when I fix him?

I've just bought a yorkie. I have read that you'll need to shave the ears to help them stand. I know that it's "Correct" for yorkie's ears to be Erect, but I have looked at both Erect and Floppy, once they are full grown, and I think Floppy is very cute. I have decided not to trim her ear hair. If they stand, it will be her choice!!! But, I hope they remain floppy!!

Hi Everyone!  Here is the best way to make your Yorkie's ears stand up.  I have been helping professional kennels with "problem ears" for years - as well as running a dog rescue for about 10 years.  I have actually fostered "reject Yorkies" who were given to me for rehoming because they were rejected because of floppy ears.

What you want to do is this.  Go to the drugstore or the pharmacy section of a grocery store.  Look for Dr. Scholl's foot products.  There you will find something called "moleskin."  It looks like beige felt and it has a peel-off backing.  You want to buy that.

Next, take your puppy and you're going to want to shave the ear or ears that are flopping, inside and out.  Some people use electric trimmers, but I use a good old fashioned men's shaving razor or disposable razor because the buzzing noise can frighten puppies and if the puppy jerks away, yes, even electric razors can cause a bad cut.

With the ear dry, carefully and lightly start shaving the outer area of the back of the ear.  Just move the razor in the direction of the way that the hair grows.  Carefully and softly shave all of the hair off taking every few moments to tap the razor over a sink to get rid of the hair in the razor.

Next, do the same on the insides of the tips of the ears.

Finally, take a pair of tiny scissors and trim any excess hair out of the inside of the ear canals.

Now that you are done, carefully cut a shape out of the moleskin that will fit the wedge area of the inside of the ear.

Take a bit of rubbing alcohol and swab the inside of the ear.  The idea is to get rid of any oils on the skin.

Peel the back off of your moleskin and stick it on the inside of the ear.  It should fit just inside the interior part of the ear canal, the upper section of the ear that is flopping.  This moleskin is stiff enough to support the ear.

Carefully take the ear with the moleskin in it and fold it in half in order to create a fold in the middle (inwards).  This will help the ear stand up.

If and when the moleskin starts to lose rigidity or come off, cut another piece of moleskin and replace it.  A piece of moleskin lasts, usually, one to two days.  When you take it off you can see how well the moleskin trained the ear to stand up.  It can take anywhere from three days to a month to get the ears to start standing up.

Lastly, one of the reasons that the ears fall down is because of teething or growing.  The body is putting all calcium into growing bones and teeth.  This is the time to boost calcium in your puppy's diet through lightly warmed cottage cheese (I give it first thing in the mornings) or yogurt, both of which have high amounts of calcium.  The calcium you feed your puppy will grow the cartilage in his or her ears that is necessary to help the ear stand erect.

This method usually works.  If it does not, don't despair...your puppy still loves you dearly!

Good luck, everyone!
