Hi,
How come that when I convert an avi file into mpeg using tmpg encoder, the size increases from 700 Mb to nearly 3 Gb?
Thanks for your help

Unlike MPEG files, which define the compressor/codec, usually MPEG-1/2, AVI files are containers for audio and video streams that can be encoded with a whole range of commonly available compressor/codecs. Looking at the filesizes you quote, I would bet that the avi file was a DivX or XviD compressed file, which offers vastly greater compression ratio's than MPEG - hence the increase in size when converting to an MPEG.
