I currently have a 14 month miniature dachshund and I will be getting a 6 week old miniature dachshund as a companion for her soon.  I'd like to provide the best environment for the two of them to become attached to one another.  Should I kennel the puppy while I'm gone for awhile to ensure my other dog doesn't hurt her?  If so, should I kennel her in an area where they can at least see each other and interact through the bars or would a separate room be better so they aren't frustrated that they can't reach other?  (THEY ARE BOTH GIRLS)

I think you should get a baby gate and put one of your dogs on one side and the other on the opposite side. That way the puppy would have some freedom and both the dogs could see and smell each other easily. Then when you get back home from wherever you go, let them interact with each other. When you can trust them not to fight or be mean to each other, leave them together when you go out. I hope this will help with your problem!!

Puppy gate sounds like the best solution i'ma vet and had to put a doxie to sleep because the other house dog chewed its legs off very sad.
