He is just scared.  We crate trained ours and kept him in a small crate in our bedroom at first.  He cried and cried!  The first few nights, I let him sleep in the bed with us, but didn't want to make that a habit.  He will get used to it.  Just stay firm and let him know that it's okay.  We also put one of my husband's socks in the crate with him so that he had something with our scent on it.  I strongly suggest you crate train him.  It was difficult at first, but now he loves his crate!  We won't know where he's at and when we find him, he's sleeping in his crate.  We now have him trained where we say "cage" and he runs in the crate!  Email me if you have anymore questions   taraeasterling@hotmail.com

many puppies do not like being away from there owner. To comfort your dog you can ask the breeder if possible to get something it used to have and also keep a warm bottle to feel the warmth it had with it's littermates. You can also keep a ticking clock since it sounds like a mother's heart. Other than that keep a crate! Contact makou@sbcglobal.net for more info

Well I read in Yorkie training books that it is not good to leave your Yorkie in a crate for long periods of time.  It said that you will force your puppy to soil its sleeping area and then your baby will be very hard to potty train.  I never crate-trained my baby, but I did block off my kitchen area for him, complete with a bed, carrier to sleep in and plenty of toys and food and water.  Oh and papers down for him to go potty if he needed too.  Well I take my baby to the vet for his shots and the vets are so amazed that he is potty trained so well at such a young age.  Oh and he travels in a carrier and he is fine with it.  I slept by my baby at night for his first few weeks with me and he never cried.  Now he can sleep by himself and he is fine.

I got a teacup yorkie about 6 weeks ago. He is 4 1/2 months old. I work during the day so he is crated then and he is crated when we sleep. Most of the time he goes into the crate with no crying unless we have spent a lot of cuddling time that day. I have 2 questions. When he is out of the crate he is gated in my kitchen/living room combo area. 75% he goes on the wee wee pad. But then other times he goes wherever. Am I being set back by this or is this normal? Also, the original crate seemed to be to big for him and he seemed to feel unsafe in there. The smaller one that I got definatly made a difference in his actions. I am wondering if while I am at work I should leave him in the larger one so that I can leave a pad on one side and a bed on the other. I have heard that this is a bad idea. I just don't think its fair to have him in this crate for so many hours at a time without being able to go. I have read a thousand books but nothing giving time frames on leaving him in the crate or any other examples. I think he is doing really good considering but any help would be appreciated!

thanks in advance...

We just got a Yorke he is 3 months old and we are blessed cause he does not cry. We read a lot about then and everyone seems to have an opinion about the pups so we were very scared to get one but it was one of the best choices we made. The first day home he was scared and of course we let him walk around and just get use to the surroundings, then we took him to the 2nd floor and put up gates so he wouldn't fall down the steps, we also brought up his water and food,( they say always keep food and water out for them when they are small) so that is what we did. he walked around, every room, and when it was time for bed, we put a pillow next to our bed with some stuffed animals and he feel asleep. Now I noticed he wants to come up to the bed cause he wines, but after a few minutes of playing with him and turning off the lights he falls asleep. So far so good.. Now comes paper training him.. were working on it... not that easy but you do have to keep an eye on him. Lucky think we got him when we knew we were going to be off work for a little so that he wouldn't be alone. We will be taking him to training classes.. hope that works.. and also he is great with my 6 year old.. he thinks she is the boss cause he is always following her.. good luck.. this was my fist post and I am so glad to be in the family..

WEll everyone can understand that yorkies are hard to train its maybe because they are very gentle and may be a little scared of new homing or just not ready when they really are thanks

I had the exact same problem with my yorkie pup just last week when I got her. We would block off the kitchen and have her there with her bed, toys and food. She would cry from the minute we put her there till the morning.

So we bought a crate large enough for her bed and space for some newspapers laid down and her toys. I have placed it beside my bed facing me. Since I put her there in the evenings she has been perfect. The first few nights she would start whimpering in the middle of the night after a few hours of sleeping and I would stick my fingers through the door of the crate for her to feel it and she would lick my hands and then she would be fine. Now I don't here her at all, and not to mention she does not go potty everywhere, she waits till the morning till I wake up and take her out of it.

To add to the comment about the warm bottle...there is a brand, Petstages, that makes a toy that is microwaveable to comfort puppies.  It works great!  My yorkie loves it. Here's the link:

I just got my first yorkie.  She didn't cry at first, but the 3rd day she started.  Just like a kid, though, if you get her out of the crate every time she whines, she'll always whine to get out, and back with you.  They like attention and contact (mine'son my lap right now).  But especially if you work, or go to school, it'll have to learn how to amuse itself (and not soil your house). Good luck!

When I first got my Yorkie she was only 10 weeks old and when we first put her in her crate she whinned for ever. She loves it now heres what we did:
put your dog in the crate for 10 minutes at first and then let it out so that it becomes familiar to its crate. Do this twice a day the same amount of time then praise your dog if it is quite. Each day add an extra 10 minutes to the time. Your dog will become familiar and be quite in it's crate soon. But a yorkie should never be left in a crate for more than 8 hours a day. Be sure to leave some of your dogs favorite toys in the crate so he knows that it's ok to be there and is not board and start chewing on things.

                      Good Luck

I have a five month old Yorkie named Kamille.  She is a very loving and wonderful puppy.  I can't remember her not being around.  She is protective of me already.  She can sometimes get jealous.  I am using wee wee pads.  90% of the time she pees on the paper but I am having trouble getting her to poop on the paper.  She goes to the same spot in my living room.  Any suggestions?

I had my yorkie for about 4 months and I take her out every 3-4 hours each day. Just when I think that I can let her run around the house for a few minutes after our nice walk she just wets the carpet. Sometimes I feel so discouraged. Will spaying her make it easier to train?
