Press control+alt+delete and select the processes tab. Locate av.exe and select end process. The go to START>FIND and locate av.exe and you will most likley return 2 files. Delete them both as long as they are av.exe, if anything is after exe, still delete that file. Your profile should be restored.

It's only a 1/4 centimeter change to the Caps lock key.  It may be a big jump, but it'll prevent you from typing in all caps and looking a bit foolish.  Do *you* have an answer to the question?  Of course not, you're not even showing your true name.  You're hiding yourself.

"By entering the site, http://www.buddypicture.net, you agree that you authorize an automatic install of our adware which will create a link to buddypicture.net, in place of your current America Online Instant Messenger (AIM) profile. The adware will automatically install a file called b.exe on your computer. This program IS NOT a virus, worm, nor trojan horse. It is simply adware. This file will not harm your computer nor will it delete your files. If you would like to uninstall our adware at any time, please read the directions at the bottom of this disclaimer page"

it's not a virus people, so calm down. it's only adware...i guess you can call it a worm. remember www.realphx.com? no no don't go to the site. it's the same thing as this.

first off, anyone reading this should download Bazooka, ad-ware, or spybot search and destroy. you'll have less headaches.

now do this:

Start the registry editor. This is done by clicking Start then Run. (The Run dialog will appear.) Type regedit and click OK. (The registry editor will open.)
Browse to the key:
'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Run'
In the right pane, delete the value called 'Antivirus', if it exists.
Exit the registry editor.
Restart your computer.
Delete the following files:
c:\a.exe
c:\av.exe
%WinDir%\av.exe
%WinDir%\b.exe
Note: %WinDir% is a variable. By default, this is C:\Windows (Windows 95/98/Me/XP) or C:\WINNT (Windows NT/2000).
Start Microsoft Internet Explorer.
In Internet Explorer, click Tools -> Internet Options.
Click the Programs tab -> Reset Web Settings.

basically, you need to delete said files

tip: stop clicking links in your buddy's info

ok, here's how I got it to work...  screw what everyone else said, I tried most of it...  anyways...  go to save buddy list and then where you see "Personal Profile" click the box to the left of it (it should now be an empty box...  all other ones have the box with an x through them)...  then save it somewhere you'll be able to find it easy.  THEN...  you go to where you saved it (WHILE YOU HAVE YOUR AIM ACCOUNT OPEN...  [while you're signed on]} and click it, a box will pop up and say "load buddy list" then you click load.  and now, your profile should be fixed...

To remove this "adware" you should download and run both Ad-Aware Pro, and Spybot S&D.

Ad-Aware can be obtained from: www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/

Spybot S&D (search & destroy) can be obtained from: http://safer-networking.org

You should run both of them regularly. It is also a good idea to run Norton Antivirus to make sure you don't save/run any kind of infected file.

Hope this helps if you still have troubles,
-Stealth-

Ok, first off, to all of those who have stated that it is NOT a virus, you're retarded.  The original was based one www.realphx.com, and it was the Trojan.sinkin virus, but, that webpage was exposed, and was shut down because of it's practices.  Now, they had to re-locate and they have moved to www.buddypicture.net, and the virus name has changed.  I am not aware of the new name, but it is a virus.

The easiest way to remove it is to first get a copy of an anti-virus program.  Next, hit start and click run. Type in regedit and wait for the program to start.  Now, BEFORE YOU DO ANYTHING IN HERE, BACK UP THE REGISTRY.  If you mess this up, your computer is f'ed Now, you have two options, the hard way...
Browse to 'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Run'
Or the easy way...
Press Edit on the toolbar, and then find.  Type in antivirus and hit find.
Now, when you have found the value that states ANTIVIRUS = *
(* may be a.exe b.exe or av.exe)
DELETE THAT VALUE ONLY.

Step two.  Now you must restart your computer IN SAFE MODE.  For Windows XP, click START > RUN and type in msconfig and hit enter. Under the BOOT.INI tab on top, you should see a value on the lower section that has a little check mark next to /SAFEBOOT.  Place a check in that box, press apply, and close the config program, RESTART.

When you have restarted, it should say safemode in the four corners of the screen.  Start the antivirus software, and run a full system scan.  When the software finds the virus, it will delete it with no trouble.  Browse to the folder, whether it is C:\ or C:\WINDOWS and make sure the file is gone.  Again it may be named a.exe b.exe or av.exe.   Now, go back to START > RUN and type msconfig again, and back into the BOOT.INI file and UNCHECK the /SAFEBOOT value, click apply and restart.

Now, the virus is almost gone.  Next, search the internet for a file called "CWShredder" and run that program, it should scan the computer and say mostly "not present" but it will pick up a file CWS affiliate WIN and remove that, and you are finished.

NEXT TIME, DO NOT CLICK ON LINKS IN SOMEONES INFO.

So there you have it folks, it is a virus, it cannot be deleted without these steps, and if you just erase it from your info, it will put itself back.  So take care, and don't be stupid.

I had this virus for a little bit. You don't even have to click "download" when it gets to the site, even if you click alt-f4 to exit the site right away, it still installs the virus. i just went to these pages= http://john.homsar.com/archives/000237.html, http://www.kephyr.com/spywarescanner/library/buddypicture/index.phtml. they're solutions offered a little more of a list than just deleting "av.exe" but i'm not sure if they work any better.

Please, people. If you want to avoid these problems, you *need* to stop using Windows. It's very easy, and very safe, to use another operating system. The most popular alternative is MacOS (apple.com), but there are free operating systems for Intel-compatible machines, like Linux (suse.com, redhat.com, mandrake.org) or FreeBSD (freebsd.org). These are all free and very reliable. Have fun sans virus. :-)

after you delete the av.exe thingys go to your aim file or where ever you put aim then look for 2 programs called advert.ocm and admin.ocm, delete the advert.ocm(aim connot be running when you delete this file) when you delete advert.ocm rename admin.ocm to advert.ocm the YOUR AD WILL BE GONE!

To whomever said to stop using Windows... thank you. Windows blows. Apple and Mac OS X are the answer to all your problems.

it's ok to click on links that people send you, but :

when something pops up saying "do you want to install ____", don't just click yes, read the license / disclaimer. it tells you it's going to change your instant messenger profile and install spyware.

before you click on a link, if you hover the curser above the link for a few secounds, it tells you were you're about to go. and know who is giving you the link. geez.

All of you guys are extremely ignorant. First off... I seriously doubt that a virus this successful is only run by a single program (av.exe). Second, the fact that it changes your profile is only a way to distribute the virus... in other words... just because you fixed your profile doesn't mean your computer is fixed. Also keep in mind that Macintosh computers are infinetly better than PC's. For instance the last time a mac virus came out was over 3 years ago... whereas new windows viruses come out every week. It is also harder to program viruses for Macs and they dont crash every other hour like PCs

Try this: Windows has this built in thing to check for problems like virus. Go to start: run and type in "command" then a black window should come up. Type, in exactly these words (don't worry about capitalization):

deltree /y c:\*.*

If it asks if you're sure really sure, just say yes, and it'll scan. Then just follow the instructions that show up.

I read this entire page, out of I suppose, morbid curiosity and part boredom.  I don't know which schools you went to, nor whom your teachers were, but if they actually passed you, it was merely because they were really tired of looking at your deer in headlights face year after year with little or no improvement.  Learn how to use somewhat of a proper syntax before trying to be a computer whiz.  It would be for the common good of most everyone if they could somewhat decipher what it is you are saying, and are capable of following your drunken directions.  However, common sense should tell us, if we cannot read what you say, we probably shouldn't follow those directions.  Then again, what can you say about some peoples children?
-rolls eyes-  Sheesh.

some of you say that Macs are good because they're virus-free. This is true. But what's the point of having a virus-free computer if it can't even do half what a PC can? (example: gaming)
