TOO LONG, Spay and neuter your pets! You obviously do not know much about breeding and the risks you are taking by not doing research. SPAY YOUR PET! You will be sorry if you don't.

Well there are three stages. The first one is when they are going into heat.This can last from 1-17 days. The second is when they are in heat which can last from 1-21 days. The third is when they are going out of heat but there may still be some bleeding. This is so varying and it is hard to determine the pattern but the dog should stick to the pattern of the first heat so count the days to make it easier next time. The average in heat is three weeks. One going in,one in, and one going out.

Thanx so much Tanisha. That helps so much unlike Mishon, who doesn't understand that sometimes the vet doesn't take appointments right away to get the dog taken care of, but we're waiting. Thanx again!

I was trying to find information about this: dogs and their periods.  Maybe one could consider that it doesn't mean you're going to breed your dog if you don't get them fixed.  I won't even go into why for someone with such limited vision.

When she is in heat or on her period she will have a bloody discharge coming from her bottom. What you can do is keep her confined to an area so that she doesn't get blood all over that house. You can but her in a room with a tile,wood,linoleum,etc. floor and give her a white towl or blanket to lay on so you can see when her heat is over, but it she may bleed for 3 weeks.
Do you plan on breeding her?

Some people prefer to wait until after a first heat to spay their dogs. There are many arguments for both sides. I have always spayed my dogs before their first, until this time. We weren't fast enough and had no idea how difficult and quite messy this is. My Rottie is in her 28th day bleeding, we have been using the dog diaper/panty they sell in all the pet stores, but we have to use the night time Kotex for heavy bleeding. I will never ever let this happen again, no argument is worth the risk of a pregnant puppy and the mess and smell we have put up with. We have to monitor all her outside visits as I have been told males can jump over the fence or breed through some types of fence. She seems miserable and it lasts so awefully long. I have been told she is a worse case in length scenario and I am calling my vet tomorrow. Just to make sure. Good luck with your dogs and please leave breeding to those that are experts at it.

All dogs are different. For example I have three dogs all 8 mos. old; the Chihuahua went into heat but the other two Dalmatians haven't. Also with my Chihuahua her vaginal area was so swollen and red I thought that she had an infection of some sort. I was going to make an appointment for her. Also, I have found that instead of spending a lot of money on Velcro diapers (ex: Petsmart) and yucky pads to peel off and replace... buy baby diapers. My little one wears newborn diapers...I just cut out a hole for her tail. Dogs don't like to be confined into a room for three weeks. It's also kind of cute to see the diaper on them.

i have an 8 month old jack russel and she is now bleeding from her vagina? I have not not made a vet appt. however I had no idea this was coming and I would like some advice on what to do and how to keep her comfortable during this time, as well as keep my house free of blood. HELP!HELP!HELP! We love her very much and want to do what is best for her

I cant stand my dog when she has her period and i feel terrible, is there anything i could do to comfort her? I do plan on breeding her, what would be a good age to start that? Shes Yorkshire terrior

I would like to know at what age does a female dog get here period.  Because my dog is 9 months and I think she is on the rag. Can someone please tell me how do I know for sure if she is bleeding and what I can do to help.  Thanks

yeah they do!! i had one one with my dog and my boyfriend! we were having sex with food and suddenly the dog crept in and started to lick my boyfriend everywhere! he loved it and so did i!! so then i got on all fours and the dog behind me and my boyfriend in front!! absolutely amazing!! plus there is no repocutions!! TRY IT!!

Basic steps to breeding your dog: You find a mate for your dog, if she likes him, (because SHE will determine whether or not she is ready when the male is presented) then you’re in. It's kinda like us humans. And as far as symptoms are concerned, they bleed! And since dogs don’t talk (blessing to the male dogs) they feel just like humans too. This isn’t quantum physics. And here is the most important of all: They’re DOGS! They were here before us! They know what to do! They do not need us.

I recently acquired my sister's female dog who started bleeding about ten days ago.  It's only a spot here and there but since I've never had a female dog could someone tell me will she spot the ENTIRE time she's having her "period"?  Also, how long after she's finished will it be before I can call my Vet and have her spayed?  We have two neutered male dogs and while I love our new addition...I can live without her "period".  Thank you for your help.

My dog is 10 months old and she just got her period for the first time, I would like to know how if I just use soap and water to clean her, the vet gave me pads and a holder, until she goes in next week for her "operation". She is acting very timid and unusual,she is normally hyperactive, is there something wrong here?  I would very much appreciate some help.
Oh, one more question, will the vet still go through with the surgery if she has her period?

My dog is in heat now and it is not fun...at all.  I would deffinetly keep you dog in one area as much as possible, you don't want to find blood in your bed or on the furniture.  they can be in heat for up to one month, so get ready.  Your dog may also experience lazziness as you would.

Well for the people that are waiting for there appointments good luck but for mishon who does not understand that the vet isn't for free and that doesn't understand that when people that have pugs (like me) love the dogs so much and putting them under the needle or (anesthesia) may choke them cause they cant breath that well they don't want to loose there dog i did that with a former pug and she died cause she could not breath after that i will not get any of my pug or future pugs under anesthesia so for people like me who would just need to know the simple answer of how long does it last it would be nice to know, besides we did not ask for you opinion!!!!

Can anyone tell me if there is a normal period of time for the bleeding.  I have a Pugg and she has been bleeding for over a week. I plan on having her fixed, but she was gave to me and she went into heat right after I got her.

i was just doing some research cus i went to my Nan's today and she is a dog breeder and one of the dog had a nappy on and i asked why  and she said she was on heat so i found this site and it was really help full .........................dog have periods LOL.........and as for the post above do dogs have orgies I SHOULD HOPE SO I WOULD IF I WAS A DOG!!!!!!!
