I have a 1yr Red Nose and he was limping for a few weeks on and off so I took him to his Vet and they told us that it could be Hip-Displaysia and this can happen at any age they do not have to be older dogs for this problem, they may suggest a hip-replacement which is very expensive may I suggest seeking the opinion of a Vet and then get a second opinion if a hip replacement is needed.  on the other hand it could be something minor like my dog it actaully was his knee he had torn ligamnets and there was really nothing that can be done it just takes time to heel and he was given pain meds when needed.  DO NOT give your dog any human medication for pain it may be toxic to him/her PLEASE, get your friend to a vet ASAP!!

My 2 year old blue nose is having the same problem...its been pretty bad for the past two weeks or so now occuring with both legs. i took her to the vet numerous occasions (7 times for this one problem) and they just tell me it is too only torn ligaments, but with medacation and no daily walks she still is not getting better. i am bringing her to a orthapedic vet next week hopefully they can tell me the real story.
