I rescued a Cairn from a shelter -he is 3 yrs of age and seems to have been trained in the past - now he is urinating in the house against things - how can I correct this - otherwise he seems to be a wonderful dog - I have only had him one week - is this an abandonment issue with him?  Please help.  Thank you.

Cairn boys are known to "mark" in the house.  I imagine with a house that is new to him, he has a lot of territory to claim!  This is not usually a housebreaking issue so much as a macho male issue.  Look on pet supplies sites for "belly bands."  These go around him at whizzer level and he can mark all he wants without actually getting it on anything in the house.  Otherwise, you'll have to restrict his access to areas you care about (probably your whole house!)
