A firewall is an application that helps protect your computer from hackers on the Internet. It works like a guard standing at your front door, controlling who (and who doesn't) connect to your computer.

A firewall can be considered as
a special type of router that is located between the network and the outside world.
The idea is that the firewall filters the information that can get in and go out of the
network so that it can protect network hosts from external attacks. These filters are
basically some rules on what connectivity is allowed. They consist of the source IP
and port and the destination IP and port. If a TCP packet arrives at the firewall that
satisfies all elements of the filter, the firewall does not forward the packet any
further and discards it. It is also possible to use wildcards for applying more general
rules to the system
