I recently had my lab/chow/shepherd mix neutered. And after the surgery he got mean and we had to put him to sleep. I heard something about how chow's are not good with anesthesia. What does that mean exactly? Did my dog change in his attitude when he had his surgery? He tried to attack my mother and sister and my father had to hold him down because he was going to hurt someone. So we took him to the vet and he said that best thing we could do was to put him to sleep.

I am really worried about this!! I just got a lab/chow/shepherd mix and am going to have her "fixed" next week. We have only had her for 6 weeks, but I love her so much, she is our baby. What should I do to prevent her from becoming aggressive?

I own a chowXlabXrotti and I have had no complications with her and her spay.  I think that the situation described above was a fluke and most likely will not happen to your little one.  I also work in a vets office and we have many mixes with chow coming in and have had no complications in the years I have been there. Don't worry!

I have a full breed chow chow and we had him fixed after he had a congenital birth defect I nor the breeder knew about.  The vet thought it would be beat if we got him fix.  I must say Cornbread is just the same as he was before the surgery.

I was very protective toward us before and was the same after.  He did get a little calmer but not by much.

I think your dog will be fine if you communicate with the vet about your fears and ask him how he thinks ti dog will do after surgery.

You'd be mean too, if somebody cut your gonads off.  All humor aside, my Chow/Shepherd mix (Teddy the wonder dog) came from an animal shelter.  In spite of him being hit by a truck and being left for dead with the ball-end of his left femur broken off, and being mistreated by the Denver pound, I adopted him and he's a sweetheart, albiet somewhat territorial.  I know from personal experience, that he'd give his life to protect ME or my Wife.  I guess in view of that, I can put up with a little bit of anti-social behaviour once-in-a-while.

I also have a chow/shepherd mix and we had him neutered.  He is MUCH better now.  He is not as hyper.  He is very protective of his family though, but he is 100% better.

i have a Lab/chow/shepherd mix female, just turned one year old, she is a great dog, super lovable to my girlfriend and i, but when a new person comes into her territory she freaks out hard, i think she would really hurt someone if she got the chance.

I have a Shepherd/chow mix and she just was spayed at a year and 1/2.  I don't think the spaying changed her nice sweet temperament, I think she is just getting use to the house and is being aggressive in nature towards me as a dominance attitude, alpha female thing.  She was fine after her spaying and sweet while still on the pain meds, but off of them got a bit more aggressive playing wise and nips quite a bit almost to the bruising stage.  We are working w/ her to control that.. bitter apple bottles all over the house.  Good luck w/ the spay/neuter..

I have heard rumors of chows being allergic to anesthetics (but not in any way that results in personality problems) so I warn the vet. My dog is about 50/50 chow/lab (possibly rott). Very nice coat. Getting her fixed absolutely had no difference in her personality. Unfortunately we have 2 fish ponds so it was a hassle keeping her out of the water until she healed! Otherwise usual personality. Chows = independant, one person dogs, labs = hyper but attentive learners

We have a Lab/Chow.  She does not do well at the vet and has to anesthetic everytime we go.  We tried to give relaxation pills -- didn't work.  I have never noticed any difference in her after being put under.  Like others have mentioned she is very protective - the nature of a Chow.  She will bark her fool head off but if someone comes in the door she backs away and continues to bark

Do Not worry, I have a chow/Lab Mix and when he was neutered, he was actually CALMER after the surgery- do not worry about this! The one above sounds very strange, and it probably was one thing that will only happen once, dont worry about your little guy..

I just got a 4 month old Chow/Shepherd/Golden Retriever/pyrenees and Mastiff (hes a mix of a mix of a mix, but He looks predominantly Chow and Shepherd) and He was fixed about a week ago as well as being taken from his sister and mom for the first time, and he's been very sweet and personable; Hes a big boy, so hes naturally calm, but he isnt as territorial as some chows mixes. With mixes of dominant or aloof breeds, such as chows, sharpeis and Akitas, its a good idea to take them to special dog events, obedience and socialization areas as soon as possible and as often as possible, because although some of a dogs personality is inherited, some of it is also a response to the environment. Don't lock them up outside all day either; then they get no human contact and become antisocial. Its likely that your chow mix was becoming aggressive from the start and the fixing just detonated the explosion. You can work with some dogs on aggression, but poorly bred, under socialized or mentally unstable by nature dogs may truly just be bad dogs. She may also have had an epileptic seizure type problem that some nice dogs get that makes them go into "rages". Springer Spaniels have this problem, but its something genetic that any dog can get, albeit rarely.
Chow chows and older, spitz type dogs that are still generally primitive and wolf-like may have trouble with anesthesia because they are more natural and generally wild in comparison to a weenie dog. They have loads of energy, dig and do other such behaviors because they are still very instinctive. Although there is a risk that the dog may die during the surgery from anesthesia or have trouble waking up, I dont think there are any complications from anesthesia that would change a dogs personality unless there was brain damage involved, which is a possibility.

We just adopted a lab/chow mix at the year of one. Shadrach is his name and loves the kids, but tonight he snapped at one of the kids for rubbing his chest but then again he was just fixed a week ago.

I have a Lab/Chow had it for 7 years now and recently I got a 4 month Chow/Sheppeard.
They both are amazing dog/puppy. The 7 year old has a great heart for family and protects the house, people think its a shy dog but when it comes to strangers trying to knock on door or near the door it goes crazy. It knows if the owner is coming and can sense it from far away. Its sheds a lot but a lovin good hearted dog strong brave dogs. I didn't know this dog can take a pipple down. One day my friend brought a pipple and it started to play rough with my dog, my dog gave her few chance and moved away by just trying to bark at her and move her with her head. But the pipple kept going and all I see is my dog just takes her big paw and slams it on her head and holds her down with her leg and howls... Iam like wow. That was brave. The pipple never went back to her after.

The dog treats the little puppy as her own puppy she had 7 puppies before. She teaches this dog how to play and to be calm and not to bite anything. Really nice relationship between both and im a proud owner for both of these dogs.

P.S sorry about my grammer and spelling mistakes and kind of off the subject. They are great dogs if you know how to treat them right.

I have a 3 year old lab/chow mix. She was spayed at the age of two, and her personality never changed. If anything I would say that she is a bit calmer overall now. Though that can probably be contributed to her "growing up" from her puppy years.

I have a chow/golden retriever/shepard mix, and his behavior was not changed at all by his neuter surgery. He was a stray that we found and he has some dominance issues, as well as the fact that he can be very moody(though the moody behavior is not uncommon in chow breeds) But anyways--no worries to the person with the chow mix pup, she'll be just fine. I think what happened with the one dog was some weird coincidence.

We have a chow mix baby.  He has been with us for a month. We rescued him from a crack house with 8 others like him. He seems to be a miniature collie  and  a chow mix. He's
beautiful and sweet. He is well behaved and a "luv-bug"...he loves kids AND his new family. He is well behaved. great dog!!!!
He wants to be best friends with our cat but shes not having it. He is a sweet, ummmm,
sugar puss...
Why are chows so ridiculed??
Leonardo will be 1 year old in August.
I cannot see him "Becoming" a bad boy.
I have bred shepherds, and this lil" boy is a breeze....My shepherds were "super babies"
"Leo..the mix man" is just as quick at learning and catching on as my pure breds. He is a rare find for a "FREE" dog. He fell in love with my 16 year old daughter, but has decided the rest of the family is pretty cool too. Give CHOW CHOWS a chance...Territorial but loyal.

My Chow-Shepherd mix went for spaying and i noticed a slight difference in her. According to my trainer, it's coz of the pain medication called Rimadyl. Apparently, it can cause a change in temperament. I stopped the medicine right away and she went back to the way she was.
