The bar happens to be putting on a play at the time and when he turns around to look he sees Sir Philip walking. Peter runs into a dressing room. He is desperately praying that they wont find him in the small stuffy box he hides in.
Chapter four:
As peter is sitting in the box waiting for Sir Philip to go far away, the box is lifted up and moved. The men are very close to opening the box to see why it is so heavy but luckily they just ignore the weight and put the box in a wagon destined to Kendal. Hoping the people in the wagon would take him far away Peter still stays inside the box.
Chapter five:
When Peter wakes up in the box. Feeling very cramped and uncomfortable, he hears two voices (one very scared) talking about the box that he is in. Peter tries to open the box but because he is so weak and tired he can’t. But in a second later a woman lifts open the lid and sees Peter’s pale face. She quickly lifts him out and gives him water, wine and food. When Peter is feeling better the nice person who found him in the box, named Mrs. Desmond, and a man named Mr. Desmond told him that they ran a theatre group and that he could join if he was a good enough singer. They also told him to not say anything personal about where he is from because they did not want to know.
Peter is very excited to join the play but is still very worried about someone finding him especially because he always has this feeling as if someone if watching him. When Peter wakes up the next day feeling better he hears a whisper in his ear that says:
” If you make one move, I’ll stick this knife in you”.
Chapter six:
The boy in Peters ear tells Peter that he is trying to become a actor and get a ride to England. The two boys jump off the wagon and they see Mr. Desmond. The boy introduces himself to Mr. Desmond and impresses him with his good acting skills. Peter is a little jealous of the boy and when he hears that his name is Kit (short for Christopher) and that his last name was Kirkstone he pounces on Kit and said that that was a pass in the mountains. But, because Mr. Desmond liked Kit he let the name pass and agrees that Kit could join the group. Later on they come to a post place a Mrs. Desmond told each of the boys that they could write a letter to home just to tell them they were alright and everything. After they were finished writing Peter saw on one of Kits letters that it was addressed to Sir Philip Morton!
Chapter seven:
Peter just forgets a letter but still keeps a close eye on Kit. The theater crew is coming into Oxford and they think that they would get a lot of money because of all the students at the university. But they soon figure out that they are not allowed performing in the grounds of the school. When the group did put on one play they had to cancel because of the bad, rainy weather. The crew wanted to stop the theatre tour and go their own separate ways and everyone decided that would be best. But Kit said he was going to go with the Desmond family and thought Peter was jealous of him. That’s when Peter got very angry and the two boys got into a fight and that’s when Peter found out Kits secret.
Chapter eight :
Kit is a girl! When she wrote to Sir Phillip Morton it had nothing to do with Peter. Her name is actually Kit but short for Katherine not Christopher. The crew was packing up and saying goodbye and Peter, Kit, and Mr. and Mrs. Desmond were making their way down to England on their horses. They then came to a river. Mr. Desmond and peters horse bucked and Mr. Desmond almost drowned and broke his leg! Mr. and Mrs. Desmond stayed at a inn to wait till Mr. Desmond’s leg healed but Kit and Peter went onto England. When they got there none of the theatres would take them in. Until, as they were walking, tired and hopeless, a man asked them to act for him and thought that Kit was very good. They then realized that his named was Shakespeare.
Chapter nine :
Kit and Peter realized that William Shakespeare was a very nice person. The Desmond’s made it to England okay and Kit got a very good part in the play. They practiced a lot and Kit seemed very good at acting the girls parts (because she was a girl.) But, when it came to the night of the performance Kit got very worried and left the theater. Luckily Peter knew all of her lines because of watching her practice so much. Peter went on stage and was not as good as Kit but he still did a very good job. But when he went out onto the stage he saw Sir Philip Morton sitting in the front row, watching him.
Chapter ten :
Thankfully Sir Philip did not recognize Peter as the girl part he was playing. The whole theatre crew was very upset at Kit for ditching them at the very last minute. But kit had a very good reason. Shakespeare guessed that Kit was a girl and Peter and Kit told Shakespeare everything. Peter told Kit and Shakespeare why he ran away from home end Kit told them her story. Sir Phillip was the man that Kit was supposed to marry and that is why she dressed up as a boy and ran away from home. Sir Philip is a very mean man and Kit did not want to marry him at all and if she had gone on stage instead of Peter Sir Philip would have recognized her right away!
Chapter eleven :
Now all the secrets are out! The cast got a new script for a play that Shakespeare write for King Henry. As Peter was waiting for Kit, reading the script over, a man , dressed in yellow, came up to him and started asking him about acting and asked if he could borrow the new script to look at. Peter said yes but after he realized what a fool he was and that the man dressed in yellow was probably stealing the script so that he could call the play his own idea. Now Kit and Peter have make up a plan to break into the mans house and steal the script back!
Chapter twelve :
To get the script that the man in yellow stole from them back, Kit and Peter must make a plan. The plan is that Peter will climb the wall of the yellow mans house with daggers and try to get into a window and Kit will dress up as a girl and pretend to be a damsel in distress as a distraction.
After almost getting caught Peter gets the script back and he meets up with Kit. When they get back home Peter looks over his script and he realizes that parts are underlined, crossed out and added in. Peter does not care too much about this but for some reason it bothers him. When they see a part that has been added in the realize it is a sonnet that is very poorly written and below the sonnet is the words “26 copies” and a check mark beside it. Kit thinks it means something and is very important but neither Kit nor Peter can figure out what.
Chapter thirteen :
Later Kit and Peter decide to go tell someone about the sonnet in the script. They do not want to go to anyone in the playhouse because then they might get mad for loosing the script in the first place. Peter knows this man, named Sir Joseph, who is very powerful and he is from Cumberland, like Peter, so he will probably believe Peter and Kit’s story. When they got to the mans house the knocked on the door, were let in and introduced themselves as there real names (except Kit still pretended to be a boy). After the had told their story and given Sir Joseph the evidence Sir Joseph said he could not figure it out and they would have to discuss it with other people. When everything had been sorted out they discovered that the sonnet was not real at all, it was a riddle hidden in a sonnet form. The clue read SENDNEWSBYPEEL. Everybody thought that this could mean many things but in the end they discovered that it probably meant send news to the peel tower where Sir Phillip lives in Cumberland. Sir Joseph and the other men thought that it would be best for someone to go undercover to Cumberland. They chose a agent named Tom Boyd to go with but Tom did not know the way around Cumberland, that’s when Peter got chosen for the job!
Chapter fourteen :
When Kit heard that Peter was going to Cumberland she insisted on coming too and so that all three of the agents went up to Cumberland. When they reached nearer to Cumberland they made up a plan to pretend to be a Merchant with his boys selling things from their horses. After making the long and tiring journey, the finally reached Peters house. Peters mother and the rest of his family were so glad to see Peter because he had been gone for such a long time. But Peters mother thought that it was still not safe and that they would have to stay hidden and that nobody could know that they were there. Peters dad found them a place to stay, it was not very nice but it was at least something.
Chapter fifteen :
Later on the three people went down to go spy on the Peel tower. They knew that two of the bad guys were Sir Phillip and the man in the yellow was Vicars but they needed to find out the rest of them. After looking at the tower for awhile the saw men coming. They noticed a few men one of them was Anthony Duncan and some others were Cumberland noblemen.
They waited until all the men had left when Tom decided to go in the house and look around for evidence while Peter kept watch incase men came back. Tom got inside the house and Peter waited near the bridal trail. He waited there patiently for a very long time watching the sky slowly get lighter. After he had waited a very long time, he decided he would go back and see if Tom was done yet. When he got back to their resting place all Peter saw was Kit looking very worried. Tom had not come back yet and they both knew that he probably would never.
Chapter sixteen :
Peter decided to go into the Peel Tower in search of Tom. But when he got inside he heard nothing and there was no sign of Tom. When he got into the father room he realized men talking and he ran down into a dark cellar. He heard there whole plan. The men that were with Sir Phillip Morton were going to try and kill the queen by paying a man that worked in Shakespeare’s theatre group to shoot her. Vicars stole the script so that he could tell when the right time would be. They were going to do it at the gun shot so that no one would hear the noise of the pistol going off and the terrible man who had just killed the beloved Queen run off probably to be never found. Peter was so amazed by this that he felt like going further down the steps of the cellar. As he stepped on the last step he felt a thick sticky liquid slipped, fell, and went unconscious. As he blanked out he could hear the angry sounds of the men running down the steps to see what the commotion was.
Chapter seventeen :
When Peter woke from his unconsciousness he realized he was nowhere he recognized with his legs and arms tied up. He realized that the man that they saw up at the Peel was there as well, Anthony Duncan. He asked if he wanted some wine but Peter said no and when Anthony went down to get some water Peter took his chance and cut the ropes around his arms and ran for it with Anthony yelling ferociously behind him. As Peter was running he soon realized he had nowhere to run. He was surrounded by water, he was on an island. Anthony Duncan soon caught Peter and took him back to the place that they were before. Anthony tied Peter up and went inside the small hut to make a fire. Peter cut his ropes and picked up a big slimy rock. He crept quietly into the hut to see the back of Anthony sitting over the fireplace. Still being as quiet as possible Peter raised the rock and smashed it down onto Anthony Duncan’s head.
Chapter eighteen :
Now that Peter was free he still needed to get off the island. After Peter had got enough strength and courage he swam the long swim to the mainland. Soon after he got there he heard voices and horses coming down the path. Although he was very tired he still managed to run away. But the men on the horses (which were of course Sir Philip Morton and his devilish crew) saw him running through the trees and two men chased after Peter. They ran after Peter a very long way until they could not run anymore. Peter had to get rid of them. As he was trying to figure out which way to go he lost a bit of time and one man was soon right on his tail. Peter jumped at him taking one of his legs and twisting it. The man fell off the cliff, deep down into the rock face. As Peter struggled to keep going, the other man turned and did not follow Peter any longer.
Chapter nineteen :
As Peter finally made his way back home some people that he had known for his whole life barely noticed him. When peters mom and Kit rushed out to meet him he tried to convince them that he was fine but they would not hear it. They made him lay down in bed and soon after he was recovered to his full strength. A little after Peters recovery Sir Phillip and a few of his friends come to Peters house looking for him. Peters dad tries to convince Sir Phillip that peter is not there but Sir Phillip wont believe him and Mr. Brownrigg (peters dad) will not let Sir Phillip in under any circumstances.
There is a problem, if Sir Phillip gets into the house than he will definitely find kit and peter. They need to get out of the house. Peters family tries to think up ways but none of them work until peter remembers the little opening they have downstairs in their house. Kit and peter carefully sneak out of the little opening, say good bye and go off to try and find someone who can help them.
Chapter twenty :
Peter and kit quickly make there way down to MR. Armthwaite’s house. Peter knows he is probably a loyal man because he is very rich and powerful. Once they get in the house they tell Mr. Armthwaite the problem and how Sir Phillip wants to kill the queen. After telling the important man their story kit suddenly remembers something. She remembers seeing him in sir Philips house once, she knows that they are friends and that Mr. Armthwaite is not a good person. She yells at peter to stop what he is doing and tie the bad man up. Luckily peter caught on and did as he was told. Now they two of them are riding into London themselves on beautiful horses they stole.
