I am brand new to Java & working on a simple exercise to understand an underlying principle but I am not getting it...

byte b1=1;
byte b2=2;
byte b3=b1*b2;

Now, when I javac this (I am not showing the beginning & ending of program) I get an error.  I know this is due to 'b1*b2' creating an integar answer so I then I need to type cast the answer to be a byte.  That is what I don't know how to do.  I have adjusted the 3rd line as seen below but clearly I am still doing something wrong...

  byte b3= (byte) (b1*b2)

Isn't that stating take the result of b1*b2 and place it in byte format (to stay consistant w/ b3 being formatted a byte variable)?  What am I doing wrong? Please advise
