My son is 12 years old with mental retardation, epilepsy and autism.  When he was 3 weeks old, he woke up with a fever of 105.  His blood tested negative for GBS, but his urine was positive.  He was admitted to the hospital in a general pediatric ward.  Over the next 2 days, he became inconsolable, his skin turned mottled, he stopped eating and started having seizures (although I didn't know what they were at that time).  On the third day, he basically died and was revived after several minutes (hence, the brain damage).  He spent a week on a ventilator and eventually recovered.  Doctors, educators and mental health workers tend to dismiss my questions about the GBS, even suggesting that he may have fetal alcohol syndrome (even though I never drank at all before of during my pregnancy).  My question is this:  is it possible that he had GBS and by the time he showed any symptoms it had almost worked its way out of his body?  "They" are quick to tell me he didn't have it at all, but the only reason he was hospitalized in the first place was the positive urine test.  Any info would be greatly appreciated and help put my mind at ease after all these years!  Thanks
