what were the main causes of WWI?

Although the immediate cause of World War I was the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand there were many other background causes to the war such as the massing of armies and alliances. Before World War One there was a competition between the powers of Europe to have bigger armies and navies . With this came great aggression between competing nations. Some examples of this are the competition between Britain and Germany for the largest navies and France and Germany for the largest armies. The assassination of Archduke Ferdinand was the immediate cause of World War I. When the Archduke and his wife were touring the Austria-Hungarian Empire which he would soon inherit, a Serbian terrorist attacked the royal couple with a bomb but was unsuccessful. Later that same day another Serbian shot and killed the two royals. The Austro-Hungarians decided to attack Serbia to get revenge for the assassination. Russia, who had ties with Serbia, decided to back them if Austro-Hungary attacked. When Austria Hungary attacked Serbia and Russia mobilized for war, the alliance system that had been developing since the mid-19th century clicked into action and the war engulfed Europe. Alliances were a major cause of World War One. They made it so that if two powers in Europe went to war, all the powers would go to war. For example, when Russia mobilized to threaten the Austro-Hungarians into leaving Serbia alone. This alerted the Germans who were Austria-Hungary's ally that war was likely. This would mean that Germany would have to fight Russia. An attack on Russia would drag France and Britain into the war. Germany would also then have to face war on two fronts ( France and Russia ). To them it made sense to attack France first and thus defeat that nation before having to turn to deal with Russia. Thus, Austro-Hungary's attempt to discipline her southern empire in Serbia could and did ignite a war that involved nearly all of Europe... get it ?

Nationalism because it was the reason why people disliked others from a different country than they are. This cause the nations to struggle among each other. Another cause was competition in economics and military. Britain had an excellent navy and wanted to compete with Germany, which was out growing the British military in strength and with weapons. Also the strive for colonies and a longing for territory was a struggle between Britain and Germany, because Germany had almost no colonies while Britain colonized the world.

I disagree with your statement on how militarism as one of the underlying causes of the war. Great Britain had the largest navy and army at the time. Germany was putting all her attention on building a navy and army that's stronger than Britain's.(It is NOT that Britain wanted to compete with Germany for the beginning) The competition between these two countries raised up. No agreement was made to prevent this happening.Britain claimed she'd build two dreadoughts for every one Germany built.
Militarism ROCKS!

Nationalism and militarism were large causes of WWI. With the growth of "we they" nationalism and imperialism, Germany competed with Britain for more territory and new markets. With the industrialization of Germany, the country became the largest Iron producer, fueling the competition of Germany and Britain for superiority in the arms race, in which both countries attempted to out do each other in their firepower. The Anglo-French alliance that was formed to prevent Germany from expanding, thus create a reason for war.

Well the hidden and the main cause of this Great war was Imperialism, even though the scent of nationalism was building up during that time, but the sense of Imperialism and the race for colonies was raged since the mid 1800s.  Austria-Hungarian Empire had the urge to take over Serbia, they wanted to take over it slowly by crushing any anti forces.  The compressed Serbians had no other choice so the assassination took place which led to the chain reaction of declarations of wars among the European nations.

THERE WERE MANY CAUSES OF WORLD WAR I; HOWEVER, I THINK WE WOULD ALL AGREE THAT IF COUNTRIES WEREN'T SO DAMN GREEDY AND PEOPLE WOULD FIRST WORRY ABOUT MORE IMPORTANT MATTERS IN THE WORLD, SUCH AS STARVATION LEADING TO THE DEATHS OF MANY PEOPLE (MANY OF THIS WHICH ARE YOUNG CHILDREN), OR THE PROBLEM WITH POLLUTION IN THIS WORLD, OR POSSIBLY EVEN THE DISEASE THAT MANY PEOPLE HAVE IN WHICH THEY FEEL THE NEED OF TAKING ANOTHER PERSON'S LIFE IN ORDER TO FEEL POWERFUL OR TO FULFILL AN UNCONTROLLABLE URGE INSIDE OF THEM TO WHICH WHATEVER THAT URGE MAY BE CAUSES THE LIFE LOSS TO ANOTHER HUMAN BEING, MAYBE THEN SUCH HORRIBLE THINGS AS WARS WOULDN'T HAPPEN AND MANY OF OUR FAMILY'S RELATIVES WOULD LIVE A FULL LIFE, INSTEAD OF IT BEING CUT SHORT BECAUSE OF SUCH GREAT STUPIDITY AMONG THIS HUMAN RACE. SO YES IMPERIALISM, NATIONALISM, MILITARISM, AND ASSASSINATIONS DID ALL LEAD TO THIS ENORMOUS, CATASTROPHIC EVENT, BUT MAYBE IF WE ALL WOULD HAVE CARED A LITTLE MORE AND PAID A LITTLE MORE ATTENTION TO THOSE SMALLER THINGS IN LIFE, THE WORLD WOULDN'T BE SUCH A HORRIBLE PLACE AFTER ALL.

First off, Britain did not have the largest military at all.  In fact they had only approximatly 100,000 troops attempting to protect the western front.  Secondly, the reason Germany attacked so quickly was due to the fact that they could not survive a two front war.  As soon as Russia began to mobilize, Germany had to destroy France, much like Napolean'sstrategies.  Divide and destroy the opposition.

Imperialism, the creation of overseas empires through conquest, led to frequent disputes among the powers. Disputes over colonies and commerce were an unceasing threat to peace during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and the most influential cause of WWI from the development of a war climate, to the continuing imperial strategies employed during the war.

By the late nineteenth century there was an intensifying competition, which was associated with the revival of ‘protectionism’.

With Great Britain, Italy, and France in Africa, the first Moroccan Crisis, Germany in the Middle East, Bismarck's war with France, and Germany's greed for the Alsace-Lorraine provinces of France, imperialism was already dividing up the great powers before the turn of the century. This was imperialism's long-term contribution to the breakout of war.

Then, the course of European international relations was affected by the increased agressivity and antagonism that progressed as a result of continued imperialism.
Germany created the Second Moroccan Crisis, then there was the Bosnian Crisis, and finally the Balkan Wars clearly defined the opposition between Serbia and the Austrio-Hungarian Empire.

In this way, even the so typically preached trigger of WWI of the Sarajevo assassination, was actually a consequence of imperialism's rivalry. This means that imperialism was the catalyst for the most influential and primordial events leading up to WWI, from the long-term to the immediate.

You guys are all right to some point, except for the person that said Britain had the largest Army.  There is a reason why it had been called an extension of the police force, because they had no army.

One of the main reasons WWI broke out was in the late 1800's when the Holy Roman empire was changing into Germany.  Germany was desperately seeking recognition by the rest of the world powers, but they all looked down on them as if Germany were the "New kids on the block."  From this, came an arms race.  Britain wanted so desperately to hold her status as the strongest naval power, so the leader of Britain at the time passed a Bill stating that her navy needs to equal the second and third most powerful navies combined.  After that is when the other things that you guys were stating came into affect.  The U.S. didn't enter the war until 1917, and that was due to the sinking of the Lusitania by a German U-Boat.  The Germans gave them fair warning, but the Lusitania never regarded them as a threat.  The Lusitania was carrying American troops, and American weaponry, which is why it sank so quickly.

In 1870 Germany won over two desirable French territories, Alsace and Loraine, as an outcome of the Franco-Prussian war.  The rule of these two territories by Germany caused much conflict between Germany and France.

A higher standard of living, along with advances in science, technology, and education made for a universal feeling of hopefulness and promise for the early twentieth century Europeans.  Also helping that feeling was the fact there had been no wars between the great powers since the France-Prussian war in 1870-71.
However the assassination of Archduke Francis Ferdinand on June 28, 1914 changed these feelings.  The heir to the throne of Austria-Hungary was assassinated in Bosnia by Gavrilo Princip, a young Serbian nationalist.  Six weeks later, Europe was involved in a war that would change the course of Western civilization.

See like most of us all have friends all countries had friends.  Back in the days before the Great Was (aka WWI)Russia and Germany were actually friends.  The two countries have signed a secret treaty for years, and no other country was included in it.  However, when Germany got a new ruler, who was way more interested in building a stronger army and a better navy, he decided to end the secret treaty with Russia and spend most of his time building better arms.  Russia, now left without a friend, signed a treaty with France.  Britain at the same time was interested only in her own affairs and problems and thought she did not need any friends. However, when she found out that Germany was strenghtening her navy, Britain got scared and decided to join Russia and France.  Germany now signed a treaty with Austro-Hungary.
At about the same time or not too long before the Ottoman Empire lost its powers and all the countries on the Balkans, which were the "new countries" started forming.  The strongest one of them was Serbia. Many serbs lived in the Austro-Hungarian empire,so the Serbs wanted to get all of their people under the same ruler, now that they had their own government.  Many nationalists societies formed, one of which was the black hand society.  Russsia was always considered a friend of the Serbs even though they did not have any documents signed. Austro-hungarians were scared of the soon powerful to be Serbia and was looking for a reason to attack.  When the Duke of the Austro-Hungaria was shot the government automatically assumed it was the Serbian government who had done it, not knowing about the Black Hand Society. Pretty soon the Austro-Hungarian Empire was at war with Serbia and all of their friends and the friends of their friends got involved.  Russia, France, and England, as well as Germany and Italy on the other side.  The United States did not join for a while but when Germany sunk one of our ships it was finally time to join.  All of Britain'colonies joined and all Asia was involved in no time.

I didn`t read the all thing yet to the end, but i guess you missing some parts.
How about German U-Boats, wich were interfere with American ships in Atlantic? I know by the documents, there were couple of Atlantic sea Conflicts, and some of the US ships were sunk (supply ships).
And i think that Imperialism, nationalism and all that other reasons werent`t the main reasons, because people were still supporting the theory of the Isolationism (i would call it a theory) and nobody wanted to go to war. Even thought, by that time the economy was growing... Jazz age was almost up, but US power and economy wasnnt`t so strong to go to War

Another point to consider is that the interlocking treaties were signed to DISCOURAGE war in the first place but instead turned a regional war into a world war.

Russia declared Serbia a protectorate to discourage Austria-Hungary from attacking it:  When Austria-Hungary attacked anyway they were forced to go to war.  Germany was committed to Austria Hungary by treaty and so declared war on Russia and then France too, for good measure.

The Brits got involved because they had promised Belgium protection against invasion, yet this was Germany's preferred route into France (always is) so they got dragged into it.

It's almost ironic that had Germany declared war on France or vice-versa, they were about the only pairing of warring nations that probably wouldn't have sucked the rest of Europe in and they were the only ones with really any reason to go to war.

the causes of the great war:
Nationalism---this simply encouraged war
The naval Race, Germany needed to expand they had a poor navy and hardly any colonies, thus the navy was thier best option. Britain threatened by Germany's increase in navy size, increased thier own navy. As a result Germany and Britain didnt get along well. Germany knew to grow, Britain had let them or Germany had to have a war if Britain intervened. This was not a cause for war, but simply increased the tension.

Serbia having alliance with Russia, waged war against Austria. Russia mobilised and Germany was not happy that thier ally Austria was being picked on. A ultimatum was sent to Russia, russians ignored it. Thus Russia also caused the WWI for mobilising thier troops. Germany mobilised and knew France would be against them becuase of the Triple alliance. Britain needed to intervene becuase of the alliance and for thier safety.

The war should have only been between Austria and Serbia, but the alliance system made it into a GREAT WAR.

Actually the German Schlieffen(sp?) plan dictated that should Germany become involved in conflict with either France or Russia (both countries were powers and flanked Germany) then Germany would have to throw all her might against the most powerful of these two flanking nations, which at the time they believed was France, then eliminate the other as well (probably because they feared in a weakened state after war with one power the other power would take advantage.)  It was the commitment to the plan that forced Germany into a war on two fronts, the same plan which Hitler criticised frequently before ww2 because it provoked a war on two fronts but then he ended up doing the same thing.  But anyways the commitement to the plan that if Germany was to declare war on France as you said it was almost inevitable they would fight Russia as well.

What were the causes and effects of The Great War? The answer to this seemingly simple question. There was more to the onset of the war then the event of an Austrian prince being murdered in Serbia, as is what most people consider to be the cause of World War I. Furthermore, the effects of the war were not just concentrated to a post-war era lasting for a generation of Westerners. No, the effects of the war were widespread throughout the world and can be traced to generations after the war. It is not a rare occasion that when a person is asked what the causes of World War I were, that they answer with the simple comment of an Austrian Prince being shot in Serbia. However the assignation of the Archduke Francis Ferdinand and his wife, Sophie , in Sarajevo was not the main cause of the Great War. Rather, it was the breaking point for Austria in its dealings with Serbia. The truth of the matter is that several factors played a role in the outbreak of the catastrophic war the engulfed the nations of Europe for over four years. World War I truly was the result of building aggressions among the countries of Europe which was backed by the rise of nationalism. To add to the disastrous pot, there was also imperial competition along with the fear of war prompting military alliances and an arms race. All of these increased the escalating tensions that lead to the outbreak of a world war.  Two opposing alliances developed by the Bismarckian diplomacy after the Franco- Prussian War was one of the major causes of the war. In order to diplomatically isolate France, Bismarck formed the Three Emperor’s League in 1872, which was an alliance between Germany, Russia, and Austria-Hungary. Then in 1882 , Bismarck took advantage of Italian resentment toward France and formed the Triple Alliance between Germany, Italy and Austria-Hungry. In 1890 Bismarck was dismissed from his office and France took the opportunity to gain an ally, therefore , in 1891 the Franco- Russian Entente was formed. Then in 1904 Britain and France put aside their conflicts and formed the Entente Cordiale. As a result , the Triple Entente , a coalition between Great Britain, France , and Russia, countered the Triple Alliance. Now Europe was divided up into two armed camps. Nationalism also played a major role in developing tensions in Europe; for it had been causing dissatisfaction since the Congress of Vienna in 1815. In that settlement the preservment of peace was chosen over nationalism, therefore, Germany and Italy were left as divided states, though they did unify in the future. The Franco- Prussian War in 1871 resulted in the France’s loss of the province of Alasce- Lorraine to Germany, and the French looked forward to regaining their lands. Then there was Austria- Hungary which controlled many lands that their neighbors felt belonged to them. Serbia wanted Bosnia and Hercegovina, Italy wanted the Trentino and Trieste regions, and the Czechs and Solvaks wanted independence from Austria- Hungrey. There was also Russia which had problems within it’s own boundaries; for Russia contained many different nationalities and many were also seeking independence in the name of nationalism. Another major conflict that caused the outbreak of the Great War was what is known as the arms race. With the hostile divisions of the nations of Europe there came the expansion of armies and navies. Furthermore, the great powers came to copy Germany’s military organization and efficiency, which called for universal registration for military duty, large reserves and detailed planning. Efforts were made for universal disarmament, but the " international rivalry caused the arms race to continue to feed on itself."  Imperial competition also played a major rule in the act of increasing the ever growing tensions among the divided countries of Europe. In Africa there were two crises in Morocco. The first time, in 1905, Germany full heartedly supported Morocco’s call for independence from France, and with the British defending the French war was only avoided because of an international conference which made Morocco a French protectorate. The second crisis occurred in 1911, and it was in protest to French supremacy in Morocco. The Germans finally gave the French a free hand in Morocco, but with a price. They demanded in exchange a portion if of the French Congo. Around this same era there was also a Bosnian crisis, which began with Austria- Hungary’s takeover of the province of Bosnia in 1908. For this Serbia threatened war on Austria- Hungary with the pledged backing of Russia. As they began to mobilize, Austria- Hungary , with the alliance of Germany, threaten war on Russia. When Russia backed down, the soon to be war was postponed, but left was a greatly strained relationship between Serbia and Austria Hungary.  On June 28, 1914 the battle lines were drawn with the assassinations in Sarajevo. It was believed that the crime was committed by a Serbian nationalist, and immediately following it Germany , with its full support pledged, pressed Austria- Hungary into declaring war on Serbia. At this same time, France was strengthening its backing of Russia. War might have been avoided if Serbia had excepted Austria- Hungary’s harsh ultimatum, however they faithfully refused. Almost at once the war fell into place. Austria declared war on July 28, 1914. The next day Russia mobilized against Austria- Hungary, on August 1st Germany declared war on Russia, and two days later on France. When Germany disregarded Belgium’s neutrality, Britain declared war on Germany. Finally war had begun, and unlike the predictions that had been made the resulting war was long, indecisive, and reeked havoc on the nations of Europe.

The four main causes of WW1 were Militarism Imperialism Alliances and Nationalism.

Militarism because of the arms race. Great Britain had the largest NAVY. It did not have the largest land army. However they did have a highly trained and efficient proffesional army.  Germany competed with Great Britain to build the largest navy and with France to build the largest standing army. (The German and French standing armies doubled in size between 1870 and 1914).

Imperialism because there were political tensions between the competing nations. However when it came to trade Germany and Britain actually aided each other. However, Germany often threatened British colonial empires (Boer Wars, Morocco Crisis, etc.)

Alliances. Duh. Austria Hungary take on little Serbia, Serbia gets protection from Russia, Germany not happy with this attack Russia. France and Russia are allies so France attacks Germany. Germans come through Belgium which was neutral and to close to Britain so Britain attacks Germany.

Nationalism. Everyone thought they were better then the others. Formation of Germany in 1870. Serbian fighting against Austrian powers. and so forth and so forth.

i think that the causes of world war1 was that every major country was in competition with each other and since Germany was the second greatest country, when it entered an agreement with Austria to back it up in case of war, the rest of the countries, especially Britain found it as a way to get Germany out of the way and they will no longer be competition

Well, I'd haft to say militarism and nationalism was the most biggest part of the war start in. Even though  alot of people said the assassination of  Archduke was the main. Archdukes assassination was just the spark. WW1 started cause everyone wanted to have a stronger army and navy. And I always get this. "The alliances started the war" No it didn't the alliances  just made the war  bigger then it was suppose to be. Before  it was called the great war but its called ww111 cause of ww112. The alliances didn't start it  they just made it a bigger and bloodier war.

Nationalism was not the most important factor in causing World War I, but was certainly one of many causes in contributing to war. The many causes of the war were militarism and the arms race, the alliance system, imperialism, and of course nationalism.

Imperialism was a factor in contributing to the First World War. Imperialism is the policy of gaining and holding of colonies”1. Imperialism was a cause of the First World War, because; in Africa, all the European powers except Austria and Russia had colonies there. Thus there were many clashes among France, Britain, Germany and Italy This caused bitterness and hatred between European countries. Although nations were able so settle minor disputes, countries realised that they had to form large alliances to protect their massive empires.

The alliance system was a main cause of World War I. “An alliance is an agreement made between two countries, to give each other help if”2. When an alliance is signed, those countries become know as allies. By the turn of the century two large alliances had formed in Europe. The Triple Entente and the Triple Alliance. The Triple alliance started out as the Dual alliance between Germany and Austria. Germany was concerned that the French might avenge the Franco-Prussian war and he wanted to avoid the possible Russian strike. The Austrians also had incentive to join the alliance, they wanted to extend its power into the Balkans. So in 1879 the dual alliance was formed. Bismarck was still not happy with this alliance, he wanted it to be stronger so in 1882 he Italy joined the Germany and Austria in the Triple alliance. In retaliation to the Triple Alliance France and Russia saw fit to make an alliance, known as the Franco Prussian Alliance. Then in 1904 Britain realized that it was alone in Europe so it made an alliance with France. France however wanted both of its allies to be formed in one alliance. So in 1907 Britain, France and Russia joined forces to make the Triple Entente. The alliance system was a main cause of World War I because the alliances were always made on a war footing and so it heightened the war tension and led to an arms race among the European powers. Thus all the European powers were ready for war in 1914. Since the European powers had made alliances with one another, a small dispute concerning one power might lead to a war involving all powers.

Another one of the factors that led to the First World War was militarism and the Arms Race. Militarism means, “relying on the use of the use of military force to further a nation’s interests”3. So this meant that militarist, believe that their country should have large armies and navies, so that they can be prepared to use them at a moments notice. These militaristic deals led to the arms race. Leaders of nations were under pressure to match to equal its enemy’s power. The armies of both France and Germany had more than doubled between 1870 and 1914 and there was fierce competition between Britain and Germany for mastery of the seas. At the turn of the century Britain had the fare superior army in Europe and Germany had the most powerful army. As these two attributes cancelled each other out both countries were forced to vastly improve their weakest aspect of their military. With all countries developing huge armies the people of Europe new that the inevitable was coming. As a result of the arms race and militarism, all the European powers were prepared for a war by 1914.

Although nationalism wasn’t the most important factor in causing World War I, it played a major role in the development of war.

In conclusion, there wasn’t just one particular factor that caused World War I. There were numerous problems and tensions in Europe in the 1900’s. They included Militarism, Imperialism, conflicting Alliances, Nationalism, and the trigger of the war, the assassnation of Archduke Francis Ferdinand.

There were for MAIN causes:

Militarism: Militarism means that the army and military forces are given a high profile by the government. Fueled by the industrialization of the world this allowed for mass production of weaponry and supplies.
Alliances: You know..
Imperialism:
When a country or nation takes over new lands or countries and makes them subject to their rule is called imperialism. Imperialism was necessary because the industrialization of the major European countries required new markets to sell their goods. There was also a race for who could have the largest empire.
Nationalism:  Nationalism is when people are strong supporters of the interests and rights of one’s country. It was a major factor involved in the cause of world was one. Since Europe’s countries were trying to expand their nations and colonies, nationalism was a dangerous cause of war. Nationalism fueled industrialization (and in turn militarism) of nations because in order to have the strongest armies industrialization and mass production were needed.

Imperlism is the number one cause of WWI, this is because when the more power contries invaded the lower ranks, this made them angry. Taking there land and resorces. If it waent for that, the less power contries woulen'tneed to form allies with other larger contries, and build better and bigger machines to fight with. What more do you need to know. The prove is there.

Britain had only an army of 350,000 called the BEF(British Expiditionary Force).  The army was the greatest trained riflemen in all of europe only. They only had the largest army....aswell as the fact that at the time more than three quaters of the worlds population was under British rule, so they had further access to other armies ie Australian, Indian.  Also that last statement is not correct, if Germany had declared war on France, due to the Franco-Russian agreement, Russia would come to her support, and the Schliefen plan would still have been used, with them going through Belgium.  Germany provided them with an ultimatem.  When this was rejected, Belgium was invaded.  Britain were always to get involved as they were sworn to protect the neutrality of Belgium

Causes of WWI:
it all started with the Romans way back when....their ideas, the "roman disease" was the beginning of it all...these ideas were the basis of the germans' ideas...following this was the annexation of bosnia-herzegovina.....alliances were formed and then the nations built up their navies and arms...each nation wanted to have more than their neighbors...the final straw was the assassination of austria-hungary's archduke ferdinand

Militarism
Because Britain had a great navy, Germany wanted a great navy too. Germany and France competed for larger armies. The more one nation built up its army and navy, the more the other country felt they had to do the same.
More Powerful Countries Spawned powerful armies that they believed must be used for a purpose.
Germany had strongest army
Great Britain had strongest Navy

Imperialism
Another cause for the World War was that European nations ruled smaller countries called colonies. Each country that owed these colonies and some others competed for them. Gathering colonies became known as
IMPERIALISM. France and Britain owned a lot of colonies in Africa and Asia. Germany and Italy decided they wanted to own some colonies too, this also helped start the First World War.
Countries wanted to expand their empires, so they fought for more land.

Nationalism
People believed in their country, they believed in it so blindly that would save their country for their own life.
Nationalism led European countries to compete for the largest army and navy, or the greatest industrial development.
It gave groups of people the idea that they could start their own nation.
France was still mad over loss of Alsace and Lorraine
Russia regarded itself as protector of Europe’s Slavic people
Serbia, an independent nation, many Serbs lived in Austria-Hungary
Russia was the an enemy of Austria-Hungary
Various ethnic groups resented domination and hoped to create national of own

Alliances
For Twenty years, the nations of Europe had been making alliances. It was thought the alliances would bring peace. Each country would be protected each other if a war broke out. Making it stupid for one country to have war with another.
The bad thing of these alliances was that an argument between two countries could bring all the other countries into one war. This is what happened in World War 1. A conflict between Austria-Hungary and Serbia led to the war.
In the summer of 1914 there were two alliances: The Triple Alliance which included Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy, who were against The Triple Entente which included Great Britain, France, and Russia
Alliances were needed when a country believes that the enemy it too strong for them, so they call upon their ally’s for aid.
Alliance System: Mutual hostilities, jealousy, fears and desires led countries of Europe to sign treaties of assistance that committed them to support one another if they faced attack

Aim, the four underlying causes to WWI would have to be: Nationalism (our country is better than yours), imperialism(we want your stuff, so we take it), militarism (we have to be powerful, and prove it), and finally, the system of alliances. Without that system of alliances, most of Europe probably wouldn't have entered the war, and neither would the U.S.

Militarism
Alliances
Imperialism
Nationalism
to help remember this just remember MAIN.
all this lead to war all that was needed was a spark. the spark was the assasination of Franz Ferdinand who was the archduke of austrio-hungary. Gavrillo prinzip was the man who assasinated the archduke and he was in a group called the Black Hand. he was from Serbia. he died in his cell from TB. the assasination happened on June 28th 1914. his wife sophie also died in the car with him.

THE FIRST WORLD WAR OF 1914 WAS NOT DUE TO A  SINGLE CAUSE, BUT DUE TO ACCUMULATION OF EXPLOSIVE MATERIAL FOR MANY YEARS:-
1)MILITANT NATIONALISM
2)AN ARMAMENT RACE
3) SPLIT OF EUROPE INTO 2 ARMED CAMPS
4)COLONIAL RIVALRY
5)BALKAN WARS
6)NO EFFECTIVE INTERNATIONAL ORGANISATION FOR THE PRESERVATION OF PEACE
7)SARAJEVO CRISIS.
         THESE ARE THE MAIN CAUSES.

I think the major reason would not be militarism, because if it was, why would the countries be so eager to participate in the war? Militarism was the development of weapons and armies/navies... so if the rival countries supposedly had strong armies, wouldn't that make others fear them?
In fact, I think the main reasons would be imperialism and the Alliance Systems.
Imperialism: Germany and Italy desired the expansion of their empires, so wanted to fight the other European nations because they were after their land. Furthermore, France was angry at Germany for having seized ownership of Alsace and Lorraine, so they'd be able to redeem their land by fighting them and winning...
Alliance Systems: As someone has previously mentioned, Germany and Russia used to share a secret treaty, but it had expired and hadn't been renewed, so France and Russia became allies. Germany had complained about being "surrounded", so feeling the need to defend themselves, they needed war to eliminate these enemies. Also, the Alliance Systems mean that other countries have "got your backs", so wouldn't the nations be a little relaxed as to political actions and make careless moves? These may also be factors into the start of the first world war...

well  first of all there was the industrialization of great britain this excelled them to a great power and made other nations jealous. creating an economic race germany being the second  nation to industrialize succesfully boosted germany'sself pride and nationalism. this started an arms race against britain in the area of their navy's (who could build the best ship and larger fleet). also germany was a land based power so they needed a larger infantry and well trained soldiers with effective weapons hence the invention of the machine gun and various chemical gases for gas attacks. then later in the war came the introduction of u-boats and planes adding interesting new dimensions of battle. imperialism was a great influencing factor in that britain had gained many colonies all over the world giving them great access to various raw materials and at a small price other than having to protect the colonies and have transportation for the goods. germany entered in this race at the end and didn't fair as well as the others and began some small disputes these fired up nationalistic beliefs of opposing countries and helped in the creation of various allies btwn nations prior to any war. also another key factor that has seemed to be forgotten in all this was international lawlessness as britain turned into a industrialized nation many people began to flood into cities and there were no laws so they had to be created but first there was the fighting and chaos that happened befor they ever thought of putting laws in place  then finally the last straw that broke the camels back was the assasination of the archduke and duches it gave austria a reason to declare war on sebia and that was what germany wanted so that they could attack france without making themselves look like the bad guys and once they finished off france they could move on to russia and eliminate the threat of a two front war against two formidable enemys but really it wasn't just one single event or action that caused WWIit was the accumulation of disputes btwn rivals the build up of forces and arm s the creation of colonies, nations pride and greed for more power so you cant just say it was one thing and forget the others its way more complex than that!

Uh there are two exact answers.  There is M.A.I.N and the assasination.  The M.A.I.N stands for Militarism, Alliances, Imperialsism and Nationalism.  M=because they all wanted their armies and navies to be the best.  A=their alliances went back like dominoes, each helping each other after assasination. I=each country wanted more land and more power. N=each country felt they were superior.  M.A.I.N was the gunpowder of the beginning and the assasination of Ferdinand was the freakin spark the blew everything up.  When Siberian terrorists killed him (he was from Austria-Hungary) the alliances (in a domino effect) rushed to help each other when Austria-Hungary blamed Siberia

Imperialism
   Powerful countries competing for colonies

On June 28, 1914, Franz Ferdinand, Archduke of Austria and heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, was assassinated in Sarajevo by Gavrilo Princip, a Bosnian Serb student. The Archduke was there to assert imperial authority over a disputed province. Princip was supported by pan-Serbian nationalists, with links to the Serbian military. Though this assassination is usually considered the immediate trigger for the war, its origins can be traced back to the complex web of alliances and counterbalances that developed between the various European powers after 1871

Nationalism is a strong feeling of support for one's own nation. Such strong feelings made the countries very aggressive towards other nations and quite unforgiving if their nation had been offended. At the Congress of Vienna, the idea of nationalism was neglected and instead leaders focused time on restoring peace and balancing power. However, in the year of 1848 several revolts surged in hopes of undoing the reforms put into effect at the meeting, but the rebellions were failures. Shortly, strong nationalist movements unified Italy in 1861 and Germany in 1871. After the Franco-Prussian War, France struggled to recoup, especially after a violent rebellion that helped France to finally decide on a republic as their government. The growth of powerful European nation-states demanded the services of their people to an extraordinary level. The nineteenth century's romanticism movement had helped encourage a sense of nationalism in Europeans, and pride in scientific progress also contributed to the growth of a kind of nationalism; highly aggressive and irrational.
Another factor that contributed to the increase in rivalry in Europe was imperialism. Imperialism is the desire of nations to own colonies and form an empire. European countries had been taking over colonies throughout the world since the fifteenth century and from 1870 on, there was a competition to occupy portions of the world that they had earlier considered not worth colonizing. Britain, France, and Germany had almost gone to war over clashes in North Africa, along with Russia and Britain over modern Iran. The tensions between countries would last until they finally erupted into a world war.

There were four main causes for World War I:
nationalism, militarism, imperialism, and the
system of alliances.

Nationalism is basically where people of a certain country get tired of being under the control of another usually more powerful country that has control over them. It is where citizens of a country start to feel more independent. They feel more loyal to their own country rather than the country controlling them.

Militarism is the glorification of armed strength, whereby countries try to outcompete
each other in order to build up their supply of weapons. It is the theory that the more weapons a country has, the more powerful it will be (in the sense of control over others).

Imperialism is where other countries try to build up their strength by taking over and conquering smaller, less powerful countries.
It is the reason why so many countries in the pre-World War I period fought over small and seemingly insignificant territory. For example, take the conflicts between Germany and France over Morocco, in Africa. By taking over smaller countries one at a time, a larger country could become even more powerful.

Finally, there was the whole system of alliances. Countries made so many secret treaties in the pre-war years to supposedly prevent a war. Well, it was this very idea that came back to haunt these countries. By making alliances through these treaties, Europe was literally divided into two hostile and armed camps. And when alliances were made, other countries were inevitably forced to take sides. Eventually, the event that sparked WWI, the assassination of Archduke Francis Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary, led Austria-Hungary to declare war on Serbia, which dragged in all of their allies.

So why not start showing a bit of love, and thinking of other people before yourself coz 1 person can make a change in a school, 1 school can change a city, 1 city can change a country, 1 country can change the world. So lets start with you, show a bit of love and respect.

What about the Lusitania and the Zimmerman telegram. The United States ship, the Lusitania, was sunk by unknown causes. yellow journalism publicized this so that it seemed to have been done by an enemy country. Also, the Zimmerman telegram... The Germans sent a telegram to Mexico stating that if America entered the war, Mexico should attack in U.S. In return the Germans would help gain the "lost states" which once belonged to Mexico. Once the U.S. found out about this telegram, they entered the war.
Hope this helps.

All you people stop arguing, history isn't about right or wrong answers.
The main reason for why world war 1 started was because The Black Hand gang decided to assassinate the archduke of Austria-Hungary.
Although he was assassinated, a lot of Sarajevo people did not like Austrian-Hungary therefore they declared war, using the excuse of the assassination of the Archduke.

Now, if you agree, they write back, if you don't then still write, but don't argue with  each other.

There were many causes for the start of WWI but most can be put into the categories of imperialism, alliances, the Balkans, Germany or fear of Germany, European conflict and the arms race. It is my view that a war was inevitable and that the main causes are Germany, the Balkans and the alliance system.

There where a number of causes

Britain and Germany were competing to have the most powerful navy in the world. This caused tension in Europe.

The Scramble for Africa (when European countries had tried to get as many colonies as they could) had led to many small conflicts around the world. This meant that some of the major European powers were not very friendly towards each other.

The French were very distrustful of the Germans as a result of the war in 1870-1871 that the Germans had won.

The alliance systems set up to prevent war meant that any major political disputes would inevitably lead to a large rather than a small conflict.

Nationalism. People across the world were very eager to let the rest of the world how strong and important their country was. Many people thought that their country was better than others: and thought that they'd be able to win a war very easily if there was one.

The Balkans region of Europe was claimed by both Russia and Austria (it was in general under Austrian control). This meant that the Russians and the Austrians would both be eager to enforce their authority over this region.

A desire for independence. Many people in Europe lived in countries that were part of empires. They didn't all like being ruled by people with different languages and religions and this led to conflicts that could (and did) involve other nations.

The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo. He was the heir to the Austrian throne and was murdered by Serbian nationalist Gavrilo Princip. This was the spark that caused war to be declared.

I believe the main causes of WWI (from the approximate dates of 1870-1914)were: Germany's invasion of Morocco. Of course the assassination of Francis Ferdinand. (Though in truth, i believe that the archduke set up his nephew to be killed for an excuse to get Serbia.)Speaking of which, what are your thoughts on the assassination? do u think the same, or what? just curious.

Well, basically, if you are doing this for an exam, then the main causes the examiners will be looking for are the Main ones.

Militarism
Describe about the arms race between Germany and Britain(dreadnoughts, battleships etc.)

Alliances
The triple alliance (Germany,Austria-Hungary and Italy) and the triple Entente(Britain,France and Russia)

Imperialism
Love of land in other countries, Africa, jealously of Germany about Britain and its land in Africa.

Nationalism
Love of ones country. Boasting, jealousy growing, being proud.

Those are the four basic ones. to gain more marks, try and include the long-term(above) and the short-term (Austria-Hungary trying to take over Serbia etc.) causes. Include Britain's involvement and try and go into detail about each of the causes(MAIN). Write about the assassination of Franz Ferdinand as a short-term cause.

That should get you level 5-6, depending on how much detail is written.

If it is really good, then, you might get a level 7! he he he. like I did. Woo!!!

WWI started because of the assassination of Arch Duke Ferdinand.(We don't think anyone that tired to answer this question). After the assassination of the arch duke the Astra-Hungary then declared war on Serbia because they thought Serbia killed arch duke Ferdinand and that made the French upset because the french were allegiances with Serbia. so one of Austria-Hungary'(Germany)declared war on France and Germany tried to go through Belgium to get to France well Belgium fought back to give enough time for Great Britain to send their troops to help. FORGET THIS I'M CON FUSING MYSELF.L.O.L. I hate this.

If you divide it up, you can break the causes of WWI into 3 sections.

LONG TERM FACTORS-
such as the alliance system
nationalism
militarism
imperialism and economic rivalry

INTERMEDIATE FACTORS-
the Moroccan and Balkan crises

IMMEDIATE FACTORS/Trigger to war-
The assassination of the Archduke,
Franz Ferdinand.

World War one started for many reasons. The most noticed one is the assassination of archduke Ferdinand. But the war started from alliances, imperialism, and the arms race. The alliances was the Triple alliance and the Triple Entente. The Triple alliance was made of Germany, Austria-Hungary and Italy. This was originally started to stop France from making any attack on Germany after the Franco-Prussian war, but France would not except being pushed out of the loop. So France made an agreement with Russia and Britain, called the Triple Entente or the Triple agreement, after Ferdinand was assassinated, Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia, but Serbia was allied with Serbia, and all other countries that were with Russia were dragged into the war. Along either Germany and Italy, imperialism plays the biggest part, because each country owned land in Africa, so the colonies inside Africa were immediately dragged into the war. The arms race was in the beginning of the war, when countries wanted to keep there power, so they decided to create a large production of weapons. That is the whole start of World War I.

there were many, many causes; amongst them nationalism, imperialism, the assassination of Franz Ferdinand, the Bosnian Crisis, the Moroccan crises (both of them), and the Balkan War.  Also the many alliances such as the Bismarck alliances, which fell to pieces, and then the Triple Alliance, which was then countered by the Triple Entente, and so it goes on and on!

Imperialism, Nationalism and Militarism all had a big effect on the outbreak of World War One; each had a role in making of the war.

Nationalism had a big effect on the outbreak of World War One as many countries of Europe had lost territories in numerous treaties that were signed. They then decided that they wanted them back. These people were very nationalistic and only wanted what would be best for their country. An example of a situation like this would be the settlement at the end of the Franco-Prussian war which left France very angry as they lost the territory of Alsace-Lorraine to the Germans and they were very keen to retake this territory.

Imperialism also had a big effect on the outbreak of World War One, the worlds markets were getting bigger and France and Britain had already gained colonies in 5 continents, but they wanted more and with the rise of Germany there was another player in the game that also wanted colonies, this would have helped significantly to the starting of the great war. Imperialism is simply a way of gaining valuable resources from some poorer countries and then putting those resources back into the major countries.

Militarism once again also had a big effect on the outbreak of World War One as there were many of the main countries of Europe that were in an arms race and had even doubled their army sizes. There was a massive competition between Britain and Germany for domination of the seas. Militarism is when a country gives their military priority in their government and this was defiantly happening throughout Europe with many countries fearing that their could be a war at any time and they would need to defend themselves or their allies if something like this happened.
