M actually stands for molarity, which is defined as moles of a solute per liter of solvent (mol/L).  The concentration, in other words.

M can mean several things.  It is a rather broad question, and could have several answers.  It could mean Molarity as was suggested.  I doubt very much if it is moles.  moles is usually abbreviated mol.  How ever a consideration you might take into account is the possibility of molecular weight.  It is the weight required to have Avogadro's number of molecules present in the sample.  Roughly 6.022*10^23.  And also it may (big may here) be molality.  Which is moles over kilograms.  The possibility of it being just a variable used in an equation shouldn't be canceled out either.
