I have a two year old papered Sheltie that I picked up at a pet store.  We were looking for an older dog because we didn't want to deal with the obvious problems involved with puppies.  We are older, not to far away from retirement, and our kids are now away from home with families of their own.  I need a companion for when my husband is out of town, and my cats are just not enough, even though I love them dearly.  However, from the articles I have read, and from talking to "pet" people, I ended up with a Sheltie with what appears to be some serious problems.  He is more than just shy, and because I really have no idea how to deal with this, I am not making a lot of progress.  I love him, pet him, reasure him, but he's still behaving in an ancious manner.  Plus, I am not sure, but I think that in this dogs case, he suffered some serious abuse.  The one thing he needs, and I really want to be able to provide, (I could also use the exercise,) is to take him out on walks, but he will not respond positively to a leash.  He cowers and refuses to move when the leash is put on him, I even have to pick him up and carry him just to get him to go outside.  I cannot even get him to go through the door on his own, coming in or going out.  I don't want to drag him and force him, but I don't know what else to do, and it seems wrong to carry him every where.  How can I get him to respond better to this so that we can both accomplish what he and I both so desperately need?
