jpeg files downloaded from my digital camera are about 1.5MB. When I save them after some adjustments in Photoshop (as jpg files) the size increases to 3MB. I thought there should be some compression even at the maximum setting of 12 but not an increase in size. What's happening

Photoshop saves the file with a lower compression than what your camera did. So when you open it in Photoshop, and then save it with a smaller compression, the file will be proportionally larger.
